TCR Asia @ Bangsaen - Luca Engstler adds a new title to his collection

04.09.2019: Last weekend at Bangsaen, Luca Engstler was crowned TCR Asia champion for the second consecutive year. Another title added to his collection that also includes the 2019 TCR Malaysia and 2018 TCR Middle Eas

Last weekend at Bangsaen, Luca Engstler was crowned TCR Asia champion for the second consecutive year. Another title added to his collection that also includes the 2019 TCR Malaysia and 2018 TCR Middle East.

However, in the TCR Asia finale on the street circuit of Bangsaen, Engstler couldn't improve his tally of six race wins during the season. His own teammate and title contender Diego Morán took the lion's share. The Ecuadorian won both races in the attempt to beat Engstler in the final run to the championship, but second in Race 1 and third in Race 2 secured the title for the young German.

In Race 1, Engstler sprinted from the pole ahead of Pepe Oriola and Morán, but spun at T2 and rejoined in 7th position. He began to recover after a safety car period, overtaking Kim Jin Soo, Gao Hua Yang, Adam Khalid and closing the gap from the leading duo of Oriola and Morán. The latter inherited the first place when Oriola served a drive through for false start.

Engstler began to put the pressure on Morán when Kim made a mistake at T11, his car hit the tyre wall and was collected by those of Daniel Miranda and Jakraphan Davee. The safety car was deployed, but with the barriers needing repairs, the chequered flag was waved at the completion of the 75% of the distance, with Morán the winner from Engstler and Gao.

At the start of Race 2, Douglas Khoo sprinted from the pole, leading from Gao, Morán, Oriola and Engstler, but after a few corners the Malaysian driver was passed by the four Hyundai cars and then was given a drive-through for jump-start. Morán took the lead from Gao and pulled away while Gao defended the second position from Oriola and Engstler.

He gave up on lap 6 and from that moment Oriola and Engstler began to close the gap from Morán. During the final five laps, Oriola tried everything to pass Morán or pushing him to make a mistake; the same did Engstler with Oriola. But Morán put in a fantastic defence drive and took the chequered flag with a margin of four tenths over Oriola.

Race 1

1. Diego Morán (Team Engstler, Hyundai i30 N), 9 laps
2. Luca Engstler (Team Engstler, Hyundai i30 N), 0.950
3. Gao Hua Yang (Eurasia Motorsport, Hyundai i30 N), 4.092

Race 2

1. Diego Morán (Team Engstler, Hyundai i30 N), 15 laps
2. Pepe Oriola (Indigo Racing, Hyundai i30 N), 0.425
3. Luca Engstler (Team Engstler, Hyundai i30 N), 2.896

Championship points

1. Engstler 221 pts; 2. Morán 206; 3. Oriola 156
