Velarde shakes up final Red Bull Air Race World Championship battle with Chiba Qualifying win

07.09.2019: As the three pilots still in the fight for the Red Bull Air Race World Championship fought to seize momentum for the season finale in Chiba, Japan, it was an outsider – Spain’s Juan Velarde – who won Qualifying

As the three pilots still in the fight for the Red Bull Air Race World Championship fought to seize momentum for the season finale in Chiba, Japan, it was an outsider – Spain’s Juan Velarde – who won Qualifying and pole position.

But with World Championship points awarded to Qualifying’s top three, overall leader Martin Šonka of the Czech Republic finished second to extend his advantage, while his title rivals Matt Hall of Australia and Yoshihide Muroya of Japan finished without Qualifying points. Due to weather conditions, the race will start at a new, earlier time on Sunday.
Chiba, Japan

–    As the Red Bull Air Race will not continue after the 2019 season, the stop in Chiba marks not only the first World Championship finale in Asia, but also the final race, and Japan’s superfans crowded Makuhari Beach to follow the Qualifying action and their home hero Muroya.

–    But it was Velarde who found the perfect racing line in difficult conditions to stop the clock at 56.760s, while Šonka was 0.119s behind. To the surprise of spectators who expected fireworks from Muroya and Hall, the two title contenders could manage only 57.570s and 58.056s for fifth and seventh place, respectively. Another spoiler, François Le Vot of France, flew a swift 57.052 to claim the available point for third.

–    The result puts Šonka on 67 points, to 61 for Hall and 55 for Muroya. On offer in Sunday’s race is a maximum 25 points, and while the trio wrestles for the World Championship, they will also need to watch out for Ben Murphy (GBR) and Michael Goulian (USA), who are still threats for a lower spot on the overall podium.

–    Due to adverse weather conditions forecast for the Chiba region on Sunday, the Race Committee has been forced to reschedule Race Day activities for the Master Class and cancel Sunday’s Challenger Cup race. The Master Class race will now start earlier than originally scheduled, with the Round of 14 at 10:00am, followed by the Round of 8 and Final 4 at the earlier time of 12:00pm. Meanwhile the Chiba Challenger Class podium has been determined based on Saturday’s Qualifying results.

Lineups for the opening round of the final race this Sunday, 8 September 2019:

–    Juan Velarde (ESP) vs. Kirby Chambliss (USA)
–    Martin Šonka (CZE) vs. Nicolas Ivanoff (FRA)
–    Matt Hall (AUS) vs. Michael Goulian (USA)
–    Yoshihide Muroya (JPN) vs. Ben Murphy (GBR)
–    François Le Vot (FRA) vs. Cristian Bolton (CHI)
–    Pete McLeod (CAN) vs. Matthias Dolderer (GER)
–    Mika Brageot (FRA) vs. Petr Kopfstein (CZE)

QUOTE:

Juan Velarde (ESP)
: “I’m super happy with the results so far. Today in Quali, the first run wasn’t that good, but the second run was more focused, and I also played it a little more aggressive. Let’s see how the conditions are for tomorrow, because they might change quite a lot, but I am confident that if we keep working this way, and I keep flying clean and aggressive at the same time, we can do a good race tomorrow.”

Yoshihide Muroya (JPN):
“The fans normally give me the energy to win. I won two times in Chiba previously, so I think I am ready to receive the fans’ energy to win this race. Of course the weather is going to be challenging, but if we can fly, it’s going to be a fantastic day at the final race, and we will do our very best. I have a really good feeling for tomorrow.”

ABOUT RED BULL AIR RACE

The Red Bull Air Race World Championship is an aerial motorsport series that demands a combination of speed, precision and skill. Using the fastest, most agile, high performance raceplanes, pilots compete in iconic locations over water and land. The high speed, low altitude and extreme manoeuvrability required make it accessible only to the world's most exceptional pilots.

Flying just metres from the ground, 14 Master Class pilots race against the clock whilst reaching speeds of up to 370 km/h, requiring a combination of precision and skill unmatched in the world of aviation. Pilots must be in peak physical condition as they endure forces up to 12G while navigating the technical racetracks made up of air-filled pylons.

The Air Race was developed in 2003 and is accredited by the Fédération Aéronautique Internationale (FAI), with more than 90 races completed across five continents. As the most advanced aerial challenge in existence, competing in the Red Bull Air Race World Championship is the highest accolade for elite pilots. The Challenger Cup feeder series was introduced in 2014.
