Formula 2 and Formula 3 put on some great racing for the Italian Grand Prix crowds at Monza: Pirelli’s home circuit. The weekend was affected by mixed weather conditions. Formula 2 had the P Zero Yellow medium and P Zero Red soft tyres nominated, while Formula 3 had the soft tyre available.

FORMULA 2

Feature Race, the winner: Nobuharu Matsushita claimed his second feature race win of the year for Carlin. The Honda-affiliated driver came from fifth on the grid to take the lead from pole-sitter Callum Ilott before pitting at the end of lap six to switch from the softs to the mediums. He resisted heavy mid-race pressure from Ilott while keeping the performance in his tyres.

Nobuharu Matsushita: “
I had a good start and I think I was P3. I didn't push too much, Callum was pushing very hard and I knew it was going to be difficult at the end of the race, so I was waiting. Then he was pushing behind me but I just concerned myself with looking after my tyres, as always. At the end of the day it was a good strategy.”

Feature Race, alternative strategy
: Luca Ghiotto (Virtuosi) charged from 13th on the grid to finish second on his home circuit after starting on the medium tyres. He could have fought for the win but for a slow pit-stop at two-thirds distance: he emerged in seventh place before using his fresh soft tyres to work his way up to second by the finish.

Sprint Race, the winner: J
ack Aitken took his third win of the year in the sprint race for Campos Racing after soaking up race-long pressure from behind and managing his medium tyres perfectly. Jordan King took second and Nyck de Vries was third: the ART driver repeated the result he claimed in the feature race from the back of the grid, extending his championship lead to 59 points with two rounds remaining.

FORMULA 3

Race 1, the winner: C
hampionship leader Robert Shwartzman took victory from eighth on the grid, making the most of the great overtaking opportunities on Monza’s long straights. Prema team-mate Jehan Daruvala came from 10th on the grid to finish second with Yuki Tsunoda third for Jenzer Motorsport.

Race 2, the winner: T
he second race on Sunday morning took place on a drying track, with the wet tyres in use. Tsunoda came from sixth on the grid to win after an exciting battle, with Liam Lawson and Jake Hughes completing the podium.

PIRELLI QUOTE

Pirelli’s head of F1 and car racing Mario Isola: “
There was a lot of news around Formula 2 and Formula 3 in Monza, with a demonstration of next year’s 18-inch Formula 2 tyres by Jean Alesi, as well as a great display of skill, tyre management and strategy in both championships.

This was despite variable conditions throughout the weekend that made working out the best tyre use a lot harder, with drivers and teams having to react to changing circumstances at one of the fastest tracks of the season. Most importantly of all, we send our best wishes to Alex Peroni for a speedy recovery after his frightening accident on Saturday.”
