The Team Australia duo of Will Power and Simon Pagenaud continued their strong team performance this season in qualifying at Circuit Zolder in Belgium yesterday and today. With their first and third place on the provisional grid yesterday, and their third and eighth place in the second round of qualifying today, the pair amassed a total of 34.5 points which places them atop the Phanos European Team Cup competition standings.
Champ Car team’s earn points during both the Friday and Saturday qualifying sessions, with first place earning 10 points and each following position .5 points less than the preceding driver (10 / 9.5 / 9 / 8.5 / 8 etc.). Sunday race points start at 20 for the winner with each following driver picking up one point less (20 / 19 / 18 / 17 etc.). The points then are added up for each teammate to determine the standings. Conquest Racing’s points gained by lone driver Jan Heylen will be doubled for each session. (Please see attached document with current standings and points distribution.)
Team Australia recently won the Canadian Triple Crown competition, a similar competition that rewarded the best team over the three Canadian races, edging out the Newman/Haas/Lanigan Racing (NHLR) duo of Sebastien Bourdais and Graham Rahal. After the first two rounds of qualifying in Zolder, the competition for the European Team Cup seems to, once again, be very tight with only 2.5 points separating Team Australia in first place and NHLR in second. Alex Tagliani and Justin Wilson sit in third—the same position that they finished in Canada—with 26 points, with the next three teams separated by only 3 points.
The Phanos European Team Cup competition started today with the Belgium Champ Car Grand Prix and will continue next week in Assen for the Bavaria Beer Champ Car Grand Prix of Holland. The team with the most points after the two events will be rewarded with unique trophies and a week-long stay at one of the Phanos Resorts locations.
