DAKAR RALLY 2020
Stage 7
Link > 195 km – Special > 546 km – Total > 741 km
Sunday, January 12th 2020

start 75

    12:40 Sainz extends his lead

Carlos Sainz is proving to be the fastest man in the latter half of the special. The factory Mini driver is putting clear daylight between himself and his direct rivals, increasing his margin to 1'45' over Nasser Al-Attiyah at km 431 and 2'27' over Stéphane Peterhansel, who is unable to match the pace of his teammate.

Top3 at KM 483

1        305    C. SAINZ     MINI    004:16:11        00:00:00

2        300    N. AL-ATTIYAH     TOYOTA    004:18:23    00:02:12    00:00:00

3        302    S. PETERHANSEL     MINI    004:19:04    00:02:53    00:00:00

    12:19 Sainz takes control

Carlos Sainz is upping the ante! The overall leader is determined to win in Wadi Al-Dawasir and has wrested the lead from Nasser Al-Attiyah by 18 seconds after 321 km. Stéphane Peterhansel is 1'29' back.

    11:53 Radiator problem for Richard

Frenchman Thierry Richard is having a bruising start to the second half of the rally after having to stop at km 14 of the special to fix his Nissan's failing radiator.

11:12 Seaidan vaults into the lead

Yasir Seaidan is stealing the show today. The Mini driver has seized the lead at km 214 by 51 seconds over Nasser Al-Attiyah. Bernhard ten Brinke is also in great form at 1'24' back, good enough for third!

    10:51 Alonso in the mix

Fernando Alonso is passing his first contact with the dunes with flying colours. The Toyota driver was just one minute slower than Nasser Al-Attiyah at km 161.

    10:39 Al-Attiyah ahead by a whisker

Nasser Al-Attiyah is still leading the special after 161 km, but Stéphane Peterhansel is snapping at his heels at just 22 seconds back. Meanwhile, Carlos Sainz is keeping his rivals on a tight leash at just over a minute back.

10:23 Seaidan in top form today

The rest day seems to have had a salutary effect on 'the other' Saudi driver, as Yasir Seaidan is matching leader Nasser Al-Attiyah blow for blow after a hundred kilometres!

    10:18 Alshummari already struggling

What an awful start for Salman Alshummari. A clutch problem has forced the Saudi driver, now competing under Dakar Experience rules after withdrawing in stage 6, to stop at km 14.

    10:03 Serradori loses 22 minutes

Mathieu Serradori will pay dearly for getting stuck in the opening kilometres of today's special. The Frenchman, sitting in sixth place overall this morning, was 22 minutes slower than Nasser Al-Attiyah at the first checkpoint.

    09:47 Al-Attiyah attacks!

Unable to match the raw speed of the Minis, Nasser Al-Attiyah is hoping to turn the dunes in stage 7 to his advantage to move closer to Carlos Sainz in the general classification. His plan seems to be working, as the Qatari went through km 106 with 1'28' to spare over his Spanish rival. Stéphane Peterhansel is sandwiched between the two of them at 28 seconds back.

09:14 Serradori stuck on a dune

Only 15 kilometres after starting the special in fifth place, right behind Yazeed Al-Rajhi, Mathieu Serradori has got stuck at the top of a dune. This will cost the Frenchman valuable minutes.

    08:58 Alonso revving up

Fernando Alonso has started stage 7. The two-time Formula 1 champion has already finished three times in the top 7 in his first Dakar.

    08:38 Peterhansel leads the way

Stéphane Peterhansel was the first car driver to start the special. The Frenchman is ready to duke it out with Carlos Sainz and Nasser al-Attiyah, who will be starting at three-minute intervals right behind him.

    06:30 Absentees at the start

Several competitors unfortunately saw their Dakar come to a premature end on the last stage before the rest day and therefore will not be taking starter’s orders this morning, namely: César Pardo, Julián José García, Neil Hawker, Daniel Albero, Alexandre Bispo, Salman Mohammed Farhan and Eric Martínezin the bike race; Romain Dutu in the quad category; Bobby Patton, Abdulaziz Alyaeesh and Edvinas Juškauskas in the car race; and Rubén Gracia in the SSV category. Finally, the race will be poorer for the absence of Eduard Nikolaev from the truck race.

    06:20 A 3-way fight on the cards

Carlos Sainz, Nasser Al-Attiyah and Stéphane Peterhansel will all be approaching the second half of the rally with the same ambition of outright triumph in Qiddiya. The Spaniard will be in a position to defend, whilst the Qatari and the Frenchman will have to go on the attack on today’s stage...

    06:00 Back to work!

The menu for the return to racing is a hearty one… the longest stage of the Dakar is also one of the most varied. Dunes are scattered along the entire route and the drivers will have to cross mall fields of dunes measuring several kilometres. Between these portions of dune crossing, off-piste sections alternate with portions on which dune crossings mean that the riders, drivers and crews must always have their wits about them. Fast… but not too fast!
