Lloyd denied TCR Malaysia title in Sepang following tie-break decision

03.03.2020: Daniel Lloyd’s hopes of claiming the 2020 TCR Malaysia Championship title were cruelly dashed last weekend with the Yorkshireman coming agonisingly close to claiming his second TCR crown in Kuala Lumpur.

Daniel Lloyd’s hopes of claiming the 2020 TCR Malaysia Championship title were cruelly dashed last weekend with the Yorkshireman coming agonisingly close to claiming his second TCR crown in Kuala Lumpur.

Having reached the podium in every round of the series so far, Lloyd headed into the season finale with a 19-point-lead ahead of reigning champion Luca Engstler.

The weekend started well for the 27-year-old who claimed a front-row start for the opening race of the weekend in his Brutal Fish Racing Team Honda Civic Type R. Battling against the balance of performance which favoured the Hyundai machines, Lloyd faced a barrage of aggressive challenges and put up a superb fight to take second at the flag.

Under even more pressure in the final contest of the season, Lloyd was effectively boxed out of contention for the title as the Hyundai entries worked against him. In spite of their efforts, the ABRACS-backed racer put in an outstanding performance leaping into 2nd from P8 in the opening lap, but eventually dropped down the order to cross the line in P4.

Regrettably, the results weren’t quite enough to secure the overall crown. Tied on points with Engstler, Lloyd painfully missed out on the title by the narrowest of margins, with the German taking the honours on the number of race wins.

Lloyd ended his maiden TCR Malaysia season as Vice-Champion in the Drivers’ standings, with Brutal Fish Racing third in the Teams’ Championship.

“Unfortunately I missed out on the championship title by not even 1 point. It’s a gutting way to be put out of the title contention, and especially with the way the other cars behaved on track;” said Lloyd.

“I did everything I could this weekend. We qualified in P2, finished P2 in race 1, and then went from eighth to second in the opening lap of race 2. But with a grid of Hyundai’s working together for one car it meant I finished P4 In the second race.

“My championship rival had a new teammate for the last round to help him, and disappointingly he went to the extent of crashing into me. It was a real shame to finish like this and leaves a bitter taste, to be honest.

“On a positive note, I’m in the best form I’ve been in for years. The team have worked tirelessly to get the Civic into the sweet-spot and we head into our TCR Europe campaign in a really positive mindset with a lot of km’s behind us.

“I’d like to say a huge thank you to Martin Ryba and the entire Brutal Fish Racing Team, and also to the crew at JAS Motorsport. I can’t wait to go racing again!”

Lloyd’s TCR Europe preparations continue this week as he heads to Paul Ricard in the South of France for pre-season testing with the Brutal Fish Racing squad ahead of the opening round at the world-famous Spa-Francorchamps circuit on 1-2 May.
