carrozzeria Team KCMG heads to Okayama International Circuit this weekend for round two of the 2020 Super Formula season.

Despite showing good speed during the opening race of the season at Twin Ring Motegi, drivers Kamui Kobayashi and Yuji Kunimoto had their races compromised after suffering damage and the team came away with no points.

Following his podium finish at the 24 Hours of Le Mans last weekend, Kobayashi is currently in quarantine as required by the Japanese government's COVID-19 travel guidelines. In his absence, 2013 Japanese Formula 3 champion Yuichi Nakayama will return to the team. The Super GT GT500 race winner competed in Super Formula with carrozzeria Team KCMG from 2014-16, ’18.

Nakayama and 2016 Super Formula champion Kunimoto aim to capitalise on the car’s speed this weekend and come away with points finishes on the team’s second race with a two-car entry. The squad has enjoyed success at the 3.703 km circuit in the past, with Kobayashi second at the former Pacific Grand Prix venue in 2018.

The Okayama round takes place on 26-27 September.

Yuji Kunimoto:
“The first round at Motegi yielded disappointing results but we showed good potential and have made progress with the car since then. I feel confident coming to Okayama, where I won in 2016, and I think we’ll be able to fight at the front.”

Yuichi Nakayama:
“First of all, I want to thank carrozzeria Team KCMG for giving me the opportunity to race in Super Formula once again at Okayama. Looking at the potential they showed in the opening race of the season at Twin Ring Motegi, I feel confident that I can deliver a great result and repay their faith in me. I cannot wait to get out on track and start adapting to the car.”

Ryuji Doi, KCMG Head of Motorsport: “T
he first race of the season at Twin Ring Motegi was difficult, but we know there is a lot more potential than the results show. Both drivers were running in the top 10 before picking up damage and we’re hoping to score good points this weekend.

Going without Kamui is disappointing of course, but we have a lot of faith in Yuichi and have enjoyed working with him in the past. We should also extend our congratulations to Kamui for his third-place finish at the 24 Hours of Le Mans and to our partner Toyota, who earned its third consecutive win.”
