Hitech dominates Brands Hatch with double pole position
Hitech Racing and Marko Asmer snatched pole position for both races of the Lloyds TSB Insurance British Formula 3 International Series at Brands Hatch today (Saturday 14 July). The Estonian bounced back from a frustrating free practice session on Friday to take the first pole by claiming the fastest lap in-between a twice red-flagged qualifying session.
In the second session, he was able to set a series of fastest laps to put himself comfortably at the top of the timing screens, before pitting to save his tyres for the races tomorrow. His team-mate, Austrian Walter Grubmüller, was caught out in the opening session, missing out on valuable track time when the red flags halted the on-track activity.
With just one chance to set a decent time, he had to settle for 16th place on the grid for race one. More track time in the second session allowed him to go a full second faster, claiming 11th place in the process.
Team boss, David Hayle was understandably pleased for the Hitech squad to have locked out the top spot on the grid for both races.
"The team worked long into the night last night to find out what was wrong with Marko’s set-up after free practice," he said. "We made a number of changes and it gave us the desired result. Marko could possibly have gone a little bit quicker in the second session, which is good to have in hand for the races. It would be very nice to finish the weekend off with two race wins and two fastest laps now," he added.
"I only had one shot at a lap in the opening session, but with the red flags it was a good enough time," said Asmer. "I had a good run in the second session and after setting a number of quick laps I decided to save my tyres and pit early. The team has worked so hard to get the set-up right for me, my engineer was at the track until after midnight last night, so I have to thank them for this," he added.
"We waited for several minutes before going out in the first session and I was caught in the pit-lane when the red flags came out," said Grubmüller. "I only got one lap and it was only good enough for 16th. In the second one I had a lot more track time and I was able to push harder and go quicker. Another two tenths of a second would have moved me possibly two or three places up the grid, so I’m hopeful that I can move up in the races," he added.
