ROWE RACING lacks race luck at the DTM Nürburgring

23.08.2021: - Sheldon van der Linde misses chance of first podium due to damage through no fault of his own - First championship points for Timo Glock

- Sheldon van der Linde misses chance of first podium due to damage through no fault of his own

- First championship points for Timo Glock

ROWE RACING missed out on its first DTM races at the Nürburgring. After Sheldon van der Linde in the #31 BMW M6 GT3 had at least managed sixth place on Saturday after a strong recovery from grid position 18, the first podium would even have been within reach for the South African on Sunday.

After a turbulent start phase, he had the presence of mind to come into the pits immediately before the second safety car phase was called, which virtually moved him up to second place and gave him a good chance of the first podium for the team from St. Ingbert. But at the restart he was jostled by a guest starter, which caused the steering to break two corners later and his race was over prematurely.

On the other hand, Timo Glock's result on Sunday was a bright spot for the team. The former Formula 1 driver drove his #16 BMW M6 GT3 from grid position 20 to eighth place. Timo Glock thus scored his first championship points in the colours of ROWE RACING at the eighth attempt, which compensated him for Saturday's 19th place and the setbacks so far this season. ROWE RACING's next outing is in a fortnight' time in Austria at the Red Bull Ring in Spielberg.

Race 1 / Saturday

Timo Glock, #16 ROWE RACING BMW M6 GT3 - qualifying 20th place, race 19th place

Sheldon van der Linde, #31 ROWE RACING BMW M6 GT3 - qualifying 18th place, race 6th place

Qualifying on Saturday morning was anything but as desired for ROWE RACING. Sheldon van der Linde in the #31 BMW M6 GT3 was only a good four-tenths of a second off third place on the grid, but this meant he was unable to finish higher than 18th in the crowded field. Timo Glock was only 22nd in the #16 BMW M6 GT3.

In the race, Timo Glock was able to move up to seventh place due to earlier pit stops by his rivals, before the strategy of changing tyres late in the race pushed him back to 19th position. Things went better for Sheldon van der Linde, who moved up to third place until his pit stop on lap ten. After the stop, he fought his way up from 17th to sixth place with a strong recovery and collected eight championship points.

Result Saturday:

1st Kelvin van der Linde (ZAF) Abt-Audi
2nd Philip Ellis (CHE) Winward-Mercedes-AMG + 13,503 seconds
3rd Mike Rockenfeller (DEU) Abt-Audi + 14,050 seconds
6. Sheldon van der Linde (ZAF) ROWE RACING BMW + 33.058 seconds
19th Timo Glock (DEU) ROWE RACING BMW + 1:09,126 minutes

Race 2 / Sunday

Timo Glock, #16 ROWE RACING BMW M6 GT3 - qualifying 20th place, race 7th place

Sheldon van der Linde, #31 ROWE RACING BMW M6 GT3 - qualifying 16th, race retirement

Sunday's morning qualifying session did not bring a smile to ROWE RACING's face either. The first 18 cars were within one second of each other, with Sheldon van der Linde having to settle for 16th place. Timo Glock started the race in 20th position.

The race got off to a turbulent start with two safety car phases in the first five laps. Sheldon van der Linde benefited from a good start and a tactically perfect tyre change directly before the second safety car intervention and was in virtual second place after pit stops. After the second restart, however, his #31 BMW M6 GT3 was hit by a competitor and the South African had to park his car two corners later with broken steering.

Timo Glock had once again been forced off the track by two competitors in the rear of the field at the start, but then set off on a race to catch up, which took him into the points for the first time in the second half of the race and up to eighth place by the time he crossed the finish line. A subsequent time penalty against a competitor eventually saw him move up to seventh.

Result Sunday:

1st Alex Albon (THA) AF Corse-Ferrari
2nd Dani Juncadella (ESP) GruppeM-Mercedes-AMG +4.634 seconds
3rd Marco Wittmann (DEU) Walkenhorst-BMW +7,994 seconds
7. Timo Glock (DEU) ROWE RACING BMW + 43.746 seconds
DNF Sheldon van der Linde (ZAF) ROWE RACING BMW

Overall standings:
1st Kelvin van der Linde 129 points, 2nd Maximilian Götz (DEU) HRT-Mercedes-AMG 96, 3rd Wittmann 94, ... 11th Sheldon van der Linde 42, ... 15th Timo Glock 6

Hans-Peter Naundorf, Team Principal ROWE RACING
: "At the moment, we just don't have the racing luck on board. We're working hard and did a lot of things right, especially on Sunday. We're still struggling in qualifying, it's not yet the way we want it to be.

That's why we always have to fight our way from the back to the front in the race. That worked well on Saturday with Sheldon and would have been even better on Sunday. But unfortunately, a guest starter took us out of the race in a promising position. We still have room for improvement, but at least we scored points with both cars for the first time this weekend. I'm sure that gives Timo Glock a boost as well."

Timo Glock, #16 ROWE RACING BMW M6 GT3:
"I'm happy to have finally scored my first points for ROWE RACING, only now from 20th on the grid. I had to wait a long time for that. At the start, I was again bumped off twice and flushed to the back, but in the end it was still enough for the top 10. That gives me new self-confidence. Overall, I felt more comfortable in the car today."

Sheldon van der Linde, #31 ROWE RACING BMW M6 GT3
: "Sunday's race was really annoying because I would have had the chance to score the first podium for the team. My start was good and so was the pace in the early stages. We then reacted perfectly to the safety car, which was very good timing and would have put us on course for second place.

But then unfortunately I was hit by another car after the restart. That's really disappointing because to maybe finish on the podium from 16th on the grid would have been really strong."
