Esteban Muth : “A positive weekend despite difficult qualifying sessions”

The sixth round of the DTM, at the TT Circuit Assen, once again allowed Esteban Muth to collect valuable championship points.

The Belgian made two good comebacks during this meeting in the north of the Netherlands, placing his Lamborghini Huracan GT3 entered by the T3 Motorsport team in 8th and 10th place at the end of the two races. With two rounds and four races to go, he is still aiming for a top 10 finish... and a first podium.

As one of the least experienced drivers in the DTM field, Esteban Muth never ceases to surprise observers. At the TT Circuit Assen, which he was discovering for the first time, the 19 year old from Brussels had a very experienced teammate at his side.

“Mirko Bortolotti, the official Lamborghini driver, was making his first appearance in the championship,” explains the T3 Motorsport driver. “For me, it was obviously a great way to test myself against a driver with a great reputation at the wheel of a Huracan GT3. While trying to score points against our rivals, I was also looking forward to learning from him. I was not disappointed. Not everything was perfect, but it was another very positive weekend.”

Regarding points for improvement, Esteban immediately indicates qualifying. “Finding myself in 16th and 14thpositions on the two starting grids is not at all what I expected,” he said. “On Saturday, my best time was cancelled due to a track limit overrun which I cannot explain.

On Sunday I was in a position to fight for a top five finish, but the red flag came out while I was on my fastest lap. After that I did not have the benefit of new tyres. But in this championship, every detail counts. I was only 5 tenths of a second off pole position, but 15th in the standings. That says it all.”

In the race, Esteban twice made great gains with eight positions gained in the first race, to finish in 8th place in front of an estimated 30,000 spectators. On Sunday, he was once again very fast. “I even set the third fastest lap in the race, the fastest time for a Lamborghini,” continued the Belgian.

“Beyond this performance, the atmosphere with my team mate Mirko Bortolotti was excellent all weekend and I was able to learn a lot from him. With a little more success in qualifying, I am convinced that I could once again be in the top five.”

Two events are still to be contested in the 2021 DTM. After Hockenheim from 1 to 3 October, the Norisring will be the venue for the season finale from 8 to 10 October. “I am 12th in the championship and I would like to make it into the final top ten at the end of my first season in the DTM,” says Esteban.

“But more than anything else, I would like to clinch my first podium position by the end of the year. With the T3 Motorsport team and my Lamborghini Huracan GT3, I know that this is a realistic goal. I cannot wait for the rest of the season!”
