Chevrolet Motorsport Danmark - Pontus Mörth showing his talent

29.05.2007: Chevrolet Motorsport Danmark - Pontus Mörth showing his talent

A very important aspect of the participation in Danish Touringcar Championship is the sponsor and customer relations which requires its very own organisation to run simultaneous with the racing. Arrangements for tent, tables, food, beverages etc. in the paddock are not just standard jobs, so housing 100+ visitors takes its toll on the staff.

Saturday we saw a very disappointed Pontus coming out of his car after being hit by another competitor causing damages beyond repair in the limited time available before qualifying. On the other hand Henrik Lundgaard had good qualifying putting into fifth position before Super Pole where he secured a starting position on the grid as number six.

When time came for Warm Up on Sunday it was a very determinded Pontus that took his car to the track using the Last Chance to improve his position on the starting grid. And indeed he did! With two laps to get tires working he then put in a time unbeatable for the rest of the cars.

For heat 1 the start procedure is a rolling start which is still quite new in DTC and a very tense period of the race. Henrik was in the outer lane in the Parabolica when he touched the car at his side breaking his steering. After recovery of the car the mechanics did a great job to make car fit for fight and they were ready well before the time limit.

In the heat Pontus could concentrate on improving his position and aim for the eighth place since it would put him on Pole Position for the second heat. The tactics worked perfectly until officials announced he would have to start as number nine. An error by the official credited Michael Outzen a few seconds which put him into pole.

Henrik had to start the second heat from the very rear end of the field and could only try to pass as many cars as posible. He managed to do that mainly because he stayed out of trouble causing other participants to retire with damaged cars. .

The Final is with the traditional start procedure but allthough well known to everybody it ended up in havoc after a few meters. Luckily Pontus missed the start with a split second but it allowed him to avoid the pile of cars and get into the line of cars as number five. After a period behind the Safety Car a very intense fight takes place between Pontus and Jason Watt for the rest of the race, Pontus putting a lot of pressure on Watt. This was the kind of race the spectators came for and there is no doubt that this was the race of the weekend.

From his position in the middle of the field Henrik had no hope of making it to the top but just secure as many points as possible. It became a rather static race for him not leaving much room for improvements. See grafic for heat 3 here.

This was a very tough weekend with a lot of troubles but once again the team showed the spirit of the coming winners to fight and win. No doubt that with such a team Brian Groth from Chevrolet Denmark will face a bill for Champagne later in the season
