As the field moved into the sixteenth stage, position began to solidify as the gaps between the drivers gave a glimpse as to the final overall classification. The fourth stage of Rally d'Italia Sardegna was a rerun of the first stage of the event. Sebastien Loeb captured the quickest time on the first stage of the afternoon but only by 1.2 seconds from rally leader Marcus Gronholm. As a result of Loeb's stage victory, the Frenchman captured second overall from BP-Ford World Rally Team's Mikko Hirvonen.

Estonian driver Urmo Aava took the stage win in the FIA Junior World Rally Championship on the opening test of Rally d'Italia Sardegna.
His Suzuki Swift was 5.4 seconds quicker than fellow Swift driver Guy Wilks. Patrik Sandell in a Renault Clio rounded out the top three.
Stobart VK M-Sport Ford Rally Team driver Kosti Katajamaki dropped out of the top ten when his throttle broke on stage three. The Finn was tenth outright at the end of stage two but came to the finish of stage three with a broken throttle and a loss of turbo boost. It has been four months since the Finn was in the Ford and this was not the welcome return he was hoping for.

Subaru's Petter Solberg finished the Supermag Rally Italia Sardinia with his fourth stage win of the event, but the overall glory went to a dominant Sebastien Loeb, who brought his Citroen Xsara safely through the stage to beat Solberg to the rally victory by just under a minute and move into the lead of the drivers' championship standings.
