WRC Rallyes : TURKEY - SS13 SILYON2: Not in the plan and Top15 Stage classification
When the announcement was made that former World Champion Colin McRae was going to replace an injured Sebastien Loeb for Rally Turkey, the Kronos Total Citroen World Rally Team had high expectations for their replacement driver and hopes that Kronos Citroen would be able to maintain sole possession of the lead in the manufacturers' standings. McRae, who had not driven a Citroen Xsara in a FIA World Rally Championship event since 2003, and co-driver Nicky Grist were optimistic, but cautious when explaining their purpose in Turkey, saying a podium position was not expected, but they would fight for a solid finish regardless.
McRae has been as high as fourth overall this weekend, but tyre problems and tricky weather conditions have seen the living legend drop several positions since midway through the opening leg. McRae completed the fourth stage of the day eighth overall, after giving away position to Subaru World Rally Team's Chris Atkinson on the rally's 13th stage. McRae sits 18.8 seconds ahead of Francois Duval but now sits 10.5 seconds behind Kosti Katajamaki, who holds seventh overall.
Atkinson was the surprise driver on the test, moving from eighth overall to sixth, thanks to sluggish stage times from both McRae and Katajamaki.
BP-Ford's Mikko Hirvonen finished the stage with the quickest time, his first stage victory of Rally Turkey. 0.5 seconds slower than Hirvonen was his team-mate, and the leader of the rally, Marcus Gronholm. 3.9 seconds slower than Hirvonen was Petter Solberg, who finished the stage third fastest. Solberg is now 43.4 seconds off Gronholm's overall rally lead, but a slight change in weather conditions could see a heated battle take place during the afternoon's stages.
Henning Solberg was fourth quickest on the stage, and the OMV-Peugeot Norway World Rally Team driver continued to hold fourth overall. Atkinson, as mentioned above, finished the stage with the fifth quickest time.
Manfred Stohl began a recovery effort after suffering a stall earlier in the day by finishing the stage with the sixth fastest time. Xavier Pons held fifth overall by taking the seventh quickest time on the stage. Pons sits 0.3 seconds ahead of Atkinson in the overall classifications. Pons is not nominated as a point-scoring driver for the manufacturers' championship this weekend, though he remains the quickest Xsara in the competitive field.
Kosti Katajamaki and Francois Duval posted a joint-eighth quickest time on the day's fourth stage.
The Subaru World Rally Team came to Turkey with only one podium finish for the entire season, Petter Solberg's second overall in the Corona Rally Mexico ten rallies ago. Since Mexico, Solberg has suffered a season most professional drivers would choose to forget. But, things seem to be looking up for the Subaru World Rally Team as Solberg has not only maintained position in Turke weiter >>
When asked if he had regained his confidence after a sluggish start to Rally Turkey, Dani Sordo replied: "No, I am just driving my normal pace." Sordo finished the stage fourth quickest, despite his lack of confidence. Many drivers, including Matthew Wilson and Manfred Stohl commented that they were suffering a lack of confidence in a somewhat surprisingly difficult Rally Turkey. weiter >>
The opening stage of the second leg saw slightly drier conditions than those which caused several stage cancellations during the opening leg. Ercan Kazaz, the local favourite, had the responsibility of being the first on the road, but it was Petter Solberg who made the biggest fuss on the day's opening contest.
Solberg claimed the fastest time on the stage, 2.2 seconds qu weiter >>

Despite storms and torrential rain in the run-up to the event and the cancellation of three stages on safety grounds, the opening leg of the Rally of Turkey was one of the closest-run things for a long time.
With the absence of Sebastien Loeb, many thought Marcus Gronholm would run away with the event but that wasn't to be the case. The Finn won three of the day's stages weiter >>
Petter Solberg took his second stage win of the event on the day's longest stage, the 29.28Km Phaselis stage. However, it wasn't enough to let him relax his pace, with four drivers within ten seconds of his time. Solberg was clearly revelling in confidence as his Subaru Impreza was performing better than it has for a long time.
Just over two seconds slower was his brother weiter >>

Petter Solberg went fastest on the seventh stage of the event, taking the win and closing the gap to Marcus Gronholm to just over 30secs.
It was a bit of a lottery for drivers in terms of tyre choice, as the first of the two stages in this loop was muddy but the longer was thought to be drier, higher in the mountains.
Solberg had reverted to transmission setting h weiter >>
Stage six saw the demise of FIA Junior World Rally Championship contender P-G Andersson. The Swede hit some concrete by the side of the stage and the wheel was so badly damaged he was forced to stop and change it losing around two minutes as a result.

Marcus Gronholm took his third fastest stage time of the event so far but as on the previous stage, there's nothing between him and his rivals.
Mikko Hirvonen was again second fastest, 1.3 seconds slower than Gronholm but this wasn't fast enough to put him ahead of Petter Solberg, in second overall. Hirvonen was clearly beginning to enjoy the stages now that they had drie weiter >>
As the stage dried significantly since the crews drove through it as a road section this morning, Marcus Gronholm was again fastest, although this time with a smaller margin. He was just 1.2 seconds faster than team-mate Mikko Hirvonen. Both drivers reported the roads being in much better condition and while there were still muddy parts, the grip was much better. Hirvonen's time weiter >>
The main talking point as the crews returned from the first loop, but only one stage, of the opening leg of Rally of Turkey was the nature of the stages.
Due to the heavy rain, the stages were covered in mud and Kosti Katajamaki described the levels of grip as "hugely inconsistent." He likened it in places to similar levels of grip to ice.
Manfred Stohl said that weiter >>
The first competitive stage of the event, SS3, saw Marcus Gronholm blitz the 9.9Km Kumluca test, setting a blistering time 25secs quicker than the nearest competitor, Petter Solberg. However, despite a time described by other competitors as 'incredible', he was quick to point out how bad the conditions were.
Petter Solberg was second fastest, explaining he didn't have the weiter >>
SS1 cancelled
The weather played an early hand in the first leg of Rally of Turkey, as the organisers have been forced to cancel the first stage. The weather conditions are too bad for the medical helicopter to be able to react to an emergency or land in the vicinity of the stage if required and therefore, the organisers were left with no option but to cancel.

It looks like the weather in Turkey is already one of the major talking points. A storm whipped up the service park last night (Wednesday), destroying two of the teams' hospitality units and severely affecting many others.
The rain persisted throughout Thursday and forecasts are for more rain on Friday and into Saturday. Several drivers are already predicting difficult co weiter >>
As cars for the Rally of Turkey are paired with the Cyprus Rally, few technical changes were expected in Kemer. However, the pairing is limited to just engines and transmission, not to the chassis themselves, even though the engines have to be sealed onto the chassis! Citroen's Sebastien Loeb reminded his rivals exactly why he's leading the Rally of Turkey with another stage win, his eighth on only the 10th stage of the Mediterranean event. Subaru's Petter Solberg launched an attack on the first stage of day two of the Rally of Turkey to set the fastest time and move up into third place overall.
