WRC Rallyes - SS7: Solberg reigns
13.10.2006
|
|
Petter Solberg went fastest on the seventh stage of the event, taking the win and closing the gap to Marcus Gronholm to just over 30secs.
It was a bit of a lottery for drivers in terms of tyre choice, as the first of the two stages in this loop was muddy but the longer was thought to be drier, higher in the mountains.

WRC Rallyes - SS6: Closing in
13.10.2006

Marcus Gronholm took his third fastest stage time of the event so far but as on the previous stage, there's nothing between him and his rivals.
Mikko Hirvonen was again second fastest, 1.3 seconds slower than Gronholm but this wasn't fast enough to put him ahead of Petter Solberg, in second overall. Hirvonen was clearly beginning to enjoy the stages now that they had drie weiter >> |

As the stage dried significantly since the crews drove through it as a road section this morning, Marcus Gronholm was again fastest, although this time with a smaller margin. He was just 1.2 seconds faster than team-mate Mikko Hirvonen. Both drivers reported the roads being in much better condition and while there were still muddy parts, the grip was much better. The main talking point as the crews returned from the first loop, but only one stage, of the opening leg of Rally of Turkey was the nature of the stages.
Due to the heavy rain, the stages were covered in mud and Kosti Katajamaki described the levels of grip as "hugely inconsistent." He likened it in places to similar levels of grip to ice.

The weather played an early hand in the first leg of Rally of Turkey, as the organisers have been forced to cancel the first stage. The weather conditions are too bad for the medical helicopter to be able to react to an emergency or land in the vicinity of the stage if required and therefore, the organisers were left with no option but to cancel.
