GREG FRANCHI - Avant tout une question de set-up…
World Series by Renault / 7. Donington
Décidément, les week-ends se suivent et semblent se ressembler pour le Liégeois Greg Franchi, dont la monoplace n'a jamais vraiment été dans le coup à Donington, cadre de la 7ème manche des World Series by Renault. Une déception qui s'étendait à l'ensemble du Prema Powerteam en terre anglaise…
Dès les séances d'essais libres réservées à la Formula Renault 3.5, il était clair que l'unique pilote belge engagé dans les World Series allait connaître un week-end aussi délicat que celui du Nürburgring un mois plus tôt… "Rien de bien exaltant, en effet", reconnaissait Greg à l'issue des essais. "A l'exception de la deuxième qualif, où je signe le 9ème chrono de ma série, on n'était nulle part. Inutile de se voiler la face, on n'a jamais mis le doigt sur les bons réglages. Et il en allait de même pour mon équipier Christian Montanari, qui en est pourtant à sa 3ème saison à ce niveau…"
Et Franchi de continuer d'y croire, en se rappelant qu'à Monaco, il était monté sur la 3ème marche du podium. "La malchance me joue également des tours", poursuit le Liégeois, "comme j'ai encore pu le constater ici. Dans la deuxième qualif, j'étais 6ème, et il y a eu un drapeau jaune dans le dernier tour. J'ai forcément levé… et trois autres pilotes m'ont passé sans qu'aucune pénalité ne soit distribuée. Un peu dur à admettre…"
Lors de la première manche, une erreur empêchait Greg de bien figurer, le renvoyant dans le bas du classement. "Doubler à Donington relève de la gageure, et pourtant, quand vous êtes loin dans la hiérarchie, l'envie de remonter est immense. Alors, vous attaquez, vous prenez des risques, et parfois, ça ne passe pas. Mais que faire d'autre en partant d'aussi loin ? Je ne suis pas du genre à me lamenter sur mon sort, alors tant que je peux attaquer, je le fais…"
Mieux positionné en vue de la deuxième course du week-end, Greg pointait même en 11ème position juste après le départ, dans le sillage immédiat du Britannique Robbie Kerr. "Je l'ai suivi sans problème, puis il est repassé par son stand pour le pit-stop obligatoire. Comme j'étais assez rapide, j'ai attaqué deux ou trois tours avant de rentrer à mon tour. Hélas, le team a mis 2 secondes en plus que KTR pour changer les roues de ma monoplace. Résultat : je suis ressorti… derrière Kerr ! A cet instant, une place dans le top 10 était envisageable. En tentant de mettre la pression sur le Britannique, je suis sorti dans le rapide, et un trio de pilotes m'a doublé. Résultat : une anonyme 15ème place qui ne reflète absolument pas les efforts déployés pour tenter de retrouver une place plus en vue…"
Podium à Monaco, bérézina par la suite, Franchi se veut fataliste… "C'est le sport auto… Pour l'instant, on n'est pas dans le coup, et quand on trouve de bons réglages, c'est toujours un peu en dernière minute, après avoir tout modifié. Et encore, si ce n'était que ma voiture, on pourrait mettre ça sur le compte de ma relative inexpérience à ce niveau.
Mais Montanari traverse la même passe difficile. Ici, lors des qualifs, je n'étais qu'à deux dixièmes de seconde de lui, preuve que je suis dans le rythme. Mais dans cette compétition où les tests entre les courses sont interdits, il est très difficile de redresser la barre durant les meetings. Le prochain rendez-vous aura lieu au Mans à la fin du mois, et a priori, cela pourrait nous être favorable.
En tous cas, les essais que nous y avons effectués avant le coup d'envoi du championnat étaient bons. Croisons les doigts…"
