Speed and tactics gave Casper Elgaard series lead

05.09.2006: Speed and tactics gave Casper Elgaard series lead

The reigning champion was the most winning driver at double header

Motor racing – September 3rd 2006 – Danish Touringcar Championship:

Reigning Danish Touringcar Champion Casper Elgaard not only managed to grap the series lead from rival Jan Magnussen at the traditionel late Summer double header at FDM Jyllandsringen, but he also managed to build up a small cushion of 11 points – the biggest lead since the opening race of a season that has become a duel between the pair.

That Casper Elgaard could get into that position was a consequence of a mixture of speed and team tactics. The speed saw him win the shoot out qualification before going on to crushing his rivals in the following pre-final on Saturday as well as Sunday. The finals see the top five finishers from the pre-final swap positions, and this gave Jan Magnussen a record-braking fifth consecutive win in a final on Saturday. But Sunday was a completely different type of race.

Just like on Saturday the pre-final saw John Nielsen holding second place behind his team mate Casper Elgaard, but towards the end of the race, both Jan Magnussen and Henrik Lundgaard suddenly swept by, and on the finishing line Honda Accord driver Martin Jensen managed to take fourth from John Nielsen.

"It was on purpose that I did it," John Nielsen smiled in the gap between the pre-final and final. "We are racing for Team Essex wins, and if I can start the final from pole position and win it from there, we will be having a chance of giving Casper (Elgaard, ed.) a bigger lead in the championship."

The plot of John Nielsen proved bullet-proof. He sailed on to his 13th win in a final, making him the most winning driver in that race category, but behind him the real battle took place between Jan Magnussen and Casper Elgaard, who had started the race from fourth and fifth position. Even though the two rivals started the opening lap running side by side, Casper Elgaard managed to get by Jan Magnussen, and even though the latter tried every rule in the book, he could not find a way past the reigning champion, who finished third and extended his series lead.
