The first day of Rally Japan had a familiar feel to it. It started wet and Marcus Gronholm and Sebastien Loeb made the early running, with Mikko Hirvonen right behind them and Petter Solberg looking strong until he suffered mechanical problems. Marcus Gronholm rounded off the first day's 'proper' stages with another win, his sixth of eight stages so far. He was just over 4sec ahead of Sebastien Loeb to retain the lead as the field heads back towards Obihiro for two runs around the specially-constructed superspecial stage.
