Technical Tales from Jyvaskyla - Finland Rally
There hasn't been much time for technical innovation since Germany! The good news is that everyone and their equipment made the journey from Germany safely and on schedule.
Kronos Total Citroen and BP-Ford both have the same cars as in Germany. OMV Peugeot Norway took the chance to give Manfred Stohl a different car and engine, which was allowed by the regulations because it was not registered in Germany as a manufacturer.
The Subaru World Rally Team arrived with new engines for both Petter Solberg and Chris Atkinson's cars. Solberg's engine failure in Germany was described by Prodrive engineering staff as a "classic engine failure; a Big Bang." Taking into account the earlier engine change after the Shakedown accident, Solberg's car is now on its third engine within a week. The rapidly-repaired bodywork used by Solberg in Germany is unchanged for this event.
The number two car at Subaru is driven by Atkinson, which means the Australian drives the same car Stephane Sarrazin had in Germany. In the Stobart VK Ford M-Sport team, the number two driver Kosti Katajamaki has the car which Jari-Matti Latvala drove in Germany. This car not only had the normal technical make-over, from asphalt to gravel specification, but it had to have a complete change of livery as well.
There is a private Citroen Xsara WRC for Janne Tuohino, run by PH Sport - it is Toni Gardemeister's active Acropolis car, while Gigi Galli has an ex-Alex Bengue 307WRC with passive transmission, run by the BSA team. The official Red Bull Skoda team is absent but Jan Kopecky has swapped his Fabia WRC for his earlier car.
In the JWRC, Fabien Fiandino has his Citroen C2-R2 entry nominated by PH Sport to replace the recuperating Brice Tirabassi. Kalle Pinomaki has given up his 'Rookie' status on this occasion to run in a Super 1600 Renault Clio while Kosciuszko has his repaired Swift back again.
