Day to forget for Kerr at the Nurburgring
Round 6 – World Series by Renault, Nurburgring, Germany Robbie Kerr, #5 Team KTR
Race 1 – Qualified: 19th / Finished: 15th
Robbie Kerr’s weekend was dealt a blow before he even turned a wheel today as a late decision from World Series by Renault officials saw him stripped of his ninth place finish, and two championship points, from Race 2 at Spa-Francorchamps last weekend.
Scrutineering officials deemed Robbie’s car, along with that of race winner Borja Garcia, had forbidden modifications on the front-wing, a fact vigorously denied by Team KTR but their subsequent appeal ultimately unsuccessful. To compound the misery Robbie then found himself a helpless victim of contact in Race 1 at the Nurburgring but rallied to a 15th place finish at the chequered flag.
Race 1, Qualifying (Pole – Michael Aleshin, 1m45.573s) Struggling to find grip on the ultra-slick 3.198-mile track, thanks to stop-start rain showers, Robbie’s fastest lap in this morning’s qualifying run, a 1m46.794s, saw him languish down in 19th for the start of this afternoon’s race where overhead conditions proved to be better. Race 1, 16 Laps (Winner –Alvaro Parente, Victory Engineering) Still fighting understeer and rear-end grip, Robbie hustled his way to 14th by the end of the first lap and was looking strong before his race took an early turn for the worse.
Contact between James Rossiter and Alvaro Barba resulted in Rossiter spinning across Kerr’s path and punting him off track having collected the front-nose of the #6 KTR entry. As the safety car was called to action Kerr darted to the pits where he was released following a quick damage survey. Ultimately the Brit’s hopes of a strong finish were dashed and although he recovered to finish 15th, once again someone else’s mistake had proved costly for him.
Robbie Kerr - #5 Team KTR: "All things considered it’s not been the best of weekend’s so-far! I was able to race my way back up to 15th following the accident but you don’t get any points for that. Lack of grip’s been a major factor here today and we’re going to have to work hard to try and improve things before tomorrow’s race. We’ll see what happens, things have to improve for me!"
Race 2 (23 Laps), including a mandatory pit-stop, starts tomorrow at 1pm CET.
Alvaro Parente's (Victory Engineering) second win of the season took him back to the top of the World Series Formula Renault 3.5 standings. The Portuguese driver finished ahead of Borja Garcia (RC Motorsport) and Mikhail Aleshin (Carlin Motorsport) in today's race.
