Contact forces Robbie Kerr to retire from Turkish opener

17.06.2006: Contact forces Robbie Kerr to retire from Turkish opener

Round 3 – World Series by Renault, Istanbul Park, Turkey Robbie Kerr, #5 Team KTR, Race 1 – Qualified: 18th / Finished: DNF

Robbie Kerr’s debut racing at Istanbul Park in Turkey was a short-lived affair as the British standout was forced to retire on the second lap of today’s World Series by Renault race having been hit from behind on the opening lap by GD Racing’s Patrick Pilet. Kerr, racing for the Belgian Team KTR outfit, pitted following the incident but a broken left-rear wish bone forced his premature retirement from the 17-lap event.

Race 1, Qualifying (Pole – Andy Soucek, 1m39.874s) With two days of testing at the 3.341-mile Turkish track, Kerr had high hopes heading into this morning’s twenty mintue qualifying session but once again an unwelcomed red flag would interupt the flow of proceedings and subsequently Robbie’s fastest lap. On top of that, a decision to run the tire pressure low backfired and despite Kerr’s best efforts he struggled to get his Michelin’s up to temperature during the session. Setting the ninth fastest time in Group B, with a 1m40.945s, Kerr lined up for the start of this afternoon’s race in 18th place. Race 1, 17 Laps (Winner – Andy Soucek, Interwetten Racing) A great start by Robbie, in which he passed a handful of cars heading to Turn 1, quickly turned to disappointment as he was collected from behind by Patrick Pilet, the French driver launching himself over Kerr’s car to add further drama to the incident. While Kerr initially continued, closing out the opening lap in 11th place, something was obviously wrong with his Dallara-Renault and he headed to the pits, thinking he simply had a flat tire. Unfortunately for Kerr Pilet’s first lap efforts successfully bent the left-rear wish bone of the British racer’s entry and the team retired him there and then to check for further damage.

Robbie Kerr - #5 Team KTR: "I’m obviously very disappointed with Pilet’s driving. He managed to hit me and several other cars ruining our chances of a decent finish. I was pretty close to my team-mate Sean McIntosh at the end of the first lap and he went on to finish fourth so we would have been strong had we been able to continue. It just wasn’t our day but we’ll be back tomorrow!"

Race 2 (23 Laps), including a mandatory pit-stop, starts tomorrow at 1pm EET.
