A1 TEAM MALAYSIA TAKES POLE IN CHINA

01.04.2006: A1 TEAM MALAYSIA TAKES POLE IN CHINA

Shanghai, China, 1 April 2006

A1 Team Malaysia celebrated the team’s first A1 Grand Prix pole position today at the A1 Grand Prix of Nations, Shanghai, China.

The team continued preparations for the final two races of the inaugural A1 Grand Prix series this season, with final practice and qualifying sessions held today. Driver, Alex Yoong, qualified in first place for the Sprint race tomorrow after an exciting battle between nations all in pursuit of the no.1 position.

In the final practice Yoong posted the eighth fastest time in a session which started wet, but ended with the majority of teams moving to dry tyres. Yoong’s strong form continued the pace that he showed in the opening day of practice yesterday.

Yoong posted the second fastest time in the first segment of the four-segment qualifying session, and backed this up with a fourth fastest time in the second segment. After the third segment, the best two times placed Malaysia second fastest, and after his final ‘flying lap’ Yoong finished with his best two lap times putting him in the top spot.

Yoong said after qualifying, "I’m delighted with our performance today. We’ve been on the pace every lap, every session and it’s really a credit to everyone in our team for the efforts that they have put in to making A1 Team Malaysia the success that is has become. Starting on the front row will give us a really good chance of a strong points finish and a podium finish is within our grasp too, so everything is looking good for tomorrow. I’m very happy and definitely looking forward to taking the green flag for the Sprint race tomorrow."

Jack Cunningham, Team Principal, A1 Team Malaysia, added, "It’s great to see the team reap the benefits of their strong teamwork, determination and dedication. You can’t get better than that in qualifying!

It’s very important to start from as far towards the front as possible for tomorrow and we couldn’t get further forward than the number one spot! Alex has driven well in every session and proved his status as a top-class racing driver.

I want to pay tribute to the whole technical team of A1 Team Malaysia who must take the credit for this result, our Technical Director, our Chief Engineer, our mechanics and our driver. They have worked very very well together.

But let’s keep our feet on the ground. We will enjoy the next few hours as well take in the importance of this result. Then we will get down to the hard work of preparing to build on this Pole Position for a strong performance tomorrow."

The 2005/06 season of A1 Grand Prix racing concludes tomorrow with the Sprint and Feature races of the A1 Grand Prix of Nations, Shanghai, China. The series has visited 11 venues around the world, and 22 races staged with an international field of teams. The 2006/07 season will open with the A1 Grand Prix of Nations, Zaandvort, Netherlands, from 30 September – 2 October.

8TV is the official Malaysian broadcaster of the A1 Grand Prix of Nations series.
