WRC Rallyes - RACCRally Costa Daurada - Ford's Toni Gardemeister blames brakes
Ford's Toni Gardemeister has blamed a brake problem for the accident on SS10 that turfed him out of fourth-place overall on the Movistar Rally Catalunya. The Finn lost over 12 minutes whilst his Focus WRC was stuck off the road, before spectators managed to help him on his way again.
Ford team boss Malcolm Wilson blamed a rock for Gardemister's problems, saying that it had become wedged between a spring and a rear brake calliper. The incident left the Finn down in 16th place overall, but the attrition rate in Spain has been such that he is still on course to score at least one manufacturer point for Ford.
"The brake pedal went to the floor before a fourth gear corner and the car went straight on and became stuck on top of a bank, with all four wheels off the ground," Gardemeister said. "Beyond the bank was a 20-metre vertical drop and I was sitting pressing the brake pedal and waiting to go straight over the top. We were lucky. The spectators did a great job to lift us back onto the road again."
Gardemeister exit followed the retirement of Ford privateer Dani Sola on the previous stage, while works Ford driver Roman Kresta spun on SS10 and stalled the engine, losing around 20 seconds in the process.
Sebastien Loeb added another 3.7 seconds to his lead over his Citroen team-mate Francois Duval with his seventh stage win of the Movistar Rally Catalunya. Ford-driving Finns Toni Gardemeister and Mikko Hirvonen were next best on the test - the same section that had to be cancelled this morning because of spectator problems.
