The NASCAR Nationwide Series will Race, Rain or Shine
NASCAR Officials confirmed that the Nationwide Series race will go on even if it rains this Saturday at Watkins Glen International. There is only a 40% chance of rain for the Zippo 200 on Saturday afternoon that will not affect the quality of racing presented by the series.
Last weekend in Montreal, the Nationwide Series competed on rain tires in a points race for the first time in the history of any NASCAR series. Despite the rain, the race went off as planned and came to a very exciting finish as Canadian Ron Fellows took home the victory.
"While racing in wet conditions is not unusual for road courses, you certainly hope it doesn’t happen for the fans sake," stated Craig Rust, president of Watkins Glen International. "If the Zippo 200 does run in the rain on Saturday, I am confident it will still be a great race. The Glen’s elevation changes and slight banking in the turns should keep the water from standing, and provide the drivers with challenging conditions… but it will certainly keep the racing exciting for fans."
While this is not the first time in Watkins Glen International’s history that a race may be run in the rain, it is the first time that any NASCAR series would compete at WGI in the rain. Many other series compete at WGI rain or shine throughout the year.
NASCAR Officials confirmed that the Nationwide Series will continue to race as long as the conditions are safe. Following the same procedures as last weekend, NASCAR will red-flag the race to have everyone switch to wet weather gear. Then they will continue to monitor the condition of the track and only stop the race if it becomes unsafe for the competitors. In the event of a downpour or standing water on the track NASCAR will stop the race.

The action continues at Watkins Glen International, August 7-10, when the stars and cars of NASCAR take to the track. The Centurion Boats at The Glen NASCAR Sprint Cup Series race will be on Sunday, August 10 at 2:00 PM, and Zippo 200 NASCAR Nationwide Series event will be on Saturday, August 9 at 3:00 PM. Both races will broadcast live on TV.
