At 17.15 local time, 421 of the 500 crews to start the rally this morning - 212 bikes, 23 quads, 157 cars and 29 trucks - had made it through the first special stage of the 31st Dakar and were heading to, or had already arrived at, Santa Rosa de La Pampa, the end point of this first stage, where a crowd of several thousand spectators had rushed to watch the caravan pass by.
Truck Stage 1 summary Pending validation of the results, Dutchman Marcel Van Vliet (Ginaf) won the first special stage and took the lead in the general standings, picking up his first triumph on the Dakar, 2 seconds ahead of his countryman Gérard De Rooy (Ginaf). Third place went to Russian Ilgizar Mardeev (Kamaz), 22 seconds behind the day’s winner. Car Stage 1 summary Pending validation of the results, Qatari Nasser Al-Attiyah (BMW) won the first special stage, taking charge of the general standings, 2.17 ahead of Spain’s Carlos Sainz (VW) and 2.40 in front of South African Giniel de Villiers (VW). In the Open category, the stage victory went to Robby Gordon (Hummer), who finished 17th overall. Lastly, in the Production category, Italian Massimo Biasion (Mitsubishi) was triumphant.
Bike Stage 1 summary Pending validation of the results, Spaniard Marc Coma (KTM) won the first special stage, 22.05 ahead of Poland’s Jacek Czachor (KTM). Third place, 24.42 behind, went to Slovenian Miran Stanovnik (KTM), first in the marathon category. Frenchman David Frétigné, 6th to finish the stage 28.14 the day’s winner, scored the best time of the 450cc. Quad Stage 1 summary Pending validation of the results, Frenchman Christophe Declerck (Yamaha) won the first special stage, 12.56 ahead of Czech Josef Machacek (Yamaha). Third place went to Uruguayan Luis Henderson (Suzuki), 15.50 the day’s winner.
