Van Merksteijn Motorsport

The penultimate special stage of the Dakar Rally 2009 from La Rioja to Cordoba saw a dramatic change in the leader board with the elimination of Carlos Sainz which would mean that Dutchman René Kuipers would move up into 9th position overall after the cancelled stage 12th stage.

Last night, the ASO organization of the Dakar Rally 2009 has decided 24 hours after issuing the initial penalty of 2 hours for the cancellation of the 12th stage to give René Kuipers another penalty and increase the stage time with an extra 10 hours which removes Kuipers from the top ten and moves him back to 19th position.

During the last stage through the sand dunes of the Argentinean desert from Fiambala to La Rioja the majority of remaining competitors got into trouble because of the extremely loose sand in the high sand dunes. René and Filipe were stuck for several hours before they managed to free themselves to continue the stage from kilometer 171 to the finish of the special stage.

A few kilometers after they got the BMW out of what seemed a hopeless situation they were forced by the organization to abandon their attempt and leave the special stage to proceed to the bivouac using the service road located near the special stage. For not completing the special stage they were issued a time penalty of 2 hours. 24 hours later the organizers decided to give them another time penalty of 10 hours without notifying the people concerned nor giving any reason or explanation for this extraordinary decision.

The special stage from La Rioja to Cordoba has also been shortened by the ASO with 300km resulting in a sprint stage of 245km. The Dakar moved into the area where the WRC Rally of Argentina is held so the staged required a lot of steering and was physically tough for the tired Dakar drivers. These kind of stages are a lot better suited for René Kuipers then the sand dunes.

René was as a result back in front of the classifications with best place 8th halfway through the stage. Eventually René finished in 14th position at 22:29” of Roma who took his first victory in the Mitsubishi. Because of the extra 10 hours time penalty Kuipers moved back to 19th position with which he is the best classified Dutch driver in the Dakar Rally.

The last stage from Cordoba to Buenos Aires is another WRC like stage of 227km after which the survivors of the 2009 Dakar Rally have to drive a 341 kilometer liaison to a hero’s welcome in the Argentinean Capital.
