Four on the trot for Enjalbert

05.07.2009: After Jean-Éric Vergne in Eurocup Formula Renault 2.0 and Charles Pic in Formula Renault 3.5 Series, it was Dimitri Enjalbert’s turn (Boutsen Energy Racing) to make the Marseillaise ring out on the podium at Silverstone

Eurocup Renault Mégane Trophy - Silverstone - Race 2

After Jean-Éric Vergne in Eurocup Formula Renault 2.0 and Charles Pic in Formula Renault 3.5 Series, it was Dimitri Enjalbert’s turn (Boutsen Energy Racing) to make the Marseillaise ring out on the podium at Silverstone, in front of 135 000 spectators who’ve enjoyed an exciting weekend’s racing. Enjalbert takes his fourth win in a row in Eurocup Mégane Trophy. The Frenchman finishes ahead of Mike Verschuur (McGregor by Equipe Verschuur) and Giorgio Pantano (Oregon Team). Verschuur leaves Silverstone as new leader in the discipline.

Starting from pole, Dimitri Enjalbert made a perfect start and went into the first turn in the lead, ahead of Giorgio Pantano, who had charged through from the second row. Mike Verschuur and Jonathan Hirschi (TDS Racing) were in third and fourt, with Bernhard Ten Brinke (Equipe Verschuur) in 5th.

Giorgio Pantano tried to steal the lead away from Dimitri Enjalbert, but the Frenchman kept him at bay. Further back, Bernhard Ten Brinke tried an attack on Jonathan Hirschi and made contact. The Swiss driver went into a spin and fell back from 4th to 11th place. Ten Brinke was handed a drive-through penalty for this maneuver. So his 4th place fell to Nick Catsburg (Tech 1 Racing), with Fabrice Walfisch (Team Lompech Sport), Matthieu Cheruy (Tech 1 Racing) and Pierre Thiriet (TDS Racing) on his tail.

The dog-fighting between Dimitri Enjalbert and Giorgio Pantano was to Mike Verschuur’s benefit. It allowed the Dutchman to get back into contention with the two leaders, and the three formed a compact trio at the front of the race. The three drivers stayed nose-to-tail until the compulsory pitstops started. Nick Catsburg was the first of the leaders to pit, on lap 8, just after losing his 4th place to Fabrice Walfisch.

Dimitri Enjalbert made the right choice by refuelling before Giorgio Pantano and Mike Verschuur. The three drivers resumed in the same order after pitting, with two seconds between each car. Behind them, Fabrice Walfisch was pulled clear of Nick Catsburg and Jonathan Hirschi.

All Dimitri Enjalbert had to do was keep a steady hand until the chequered flag, to claim his fourth victory on the trot. Second place finally went to Mike Verschuur. He took advantage of an error by Giorgio Pantano to overtake in the last lap. The Italian driver had the considerable consolation of getting onto the podium for the first time in Eurocup Mégane Trophy. Hoevert Vos (Equipe Verschuur) took the win in the Gentlemen Driver category.

Sixth placed Jonathan Hirschi had to relinquish his leadership in the Eurocup Mégane Trophy overall standings. Mike Verschuur leaves Silverstone with a six point lead over Hirschi. Dimitri Enjalbert is third, twenty four points behind the leader.

Quote, unquote:

Dimitri Enjalbert:
“It’s been another perfect weekend! Giorgio Pantano was quicker than me at the start of the race, but we did a perfect pitstop and that gave me the win. Now I can head for Le Mans with bags of confidence, to try to do just as well there.”

Mike Verschuur:
“Silverstone was completely new to me, so I’m very pleased to have scored these really important points, which send me to the top of the championship rankings. I don’t know the track at Le Mans either. We'll just have to see what happens.”

Giorgio Pantano
: "I really enjoyed this race. It was hotly contested. I span at the end, by accelerating too hard. That cost me second. Unfortunately I can’t be at Le Mans, but I hope to be back in Nurburgring.”
