Few rewards for TDS in Silverstone

09.07.2009: 4th Round – 4-5 July World Series by Renault Eurocup Renault Mégane Trophy 2009 The sole trophy, further to Jean-Philippe Madonia’s second place in the Gentlemen Drivers

4th Round – 4-5 July  World  Series  by  Renault Eurocup Renault Mégane Trophy 2009

The sole trophy, further to Jean-Philippe Madonia’s second place in the Gentlemen Drivers classification in Sunday’s race, illustrates the poor harvest for TDS at the Northamptonshire circuit.  For Jonathan Hirschi,  4th and 6th-place finishes could not prevent Verschuur from taking over the position of Eurocup leader,  but this was a relatively minor issue compared to the problems he encountered. As for Pierre Thiriet,  he claimed an honourable 7th position on Saturday, but was forced to retire the next day ; nevertheless, he returned from the United Kingdom having gained further experience.

In Hungary, as well as the sporting penalties they were awarded, the team from Herault was unable to find the ideal level of performance they had shown during the first two rounds of 2009.  In Silverstone, the free practice sessions showed some positive signs of improvement, as Jonathan Hirschi was the fastest driver on old tyres.  He was unable to repeat this in qualifying, but still claimed the 3rd and 4th positions on the starting grid. But luck was not on the Swiss driver’s side at the starts this weekend: in the first race jostling, Ten Brinke pushed Madonia, who was catching up with him, the Dutchman then touching Hirschi’s side. Jonathan survived, but was slightly disconcerted; he then recovered, overtaking Pantano and setting the fastest race lap in the process.

Unfortunately, he was to lose the third place to Walfisch after the pit stops, and was unable to retake the position from the Parisian, his tyres being worn by this stage.  On Sunday, he was following Verschuur when the other Dutch driver, Ten Brinke, pushed him off on the second lap.  The guilty driver received a penalty, but Hirschi slid down to 11th position.  It proved impossible to climb any higher than 6th in the time remaining.

Pierre Thiriet really enjoyed the circuit, as legendary as that of Spa.  Starting 9th on Saturday, he climbed to 6th ahead of Cheruy, until a spin just before the finish allowed the latter to regain the place.  All these experiences will greatly benefit the driver from the Vosges when he returns to these tracks.
After a collision during the first start, the oil radiator was touching a wheel on Jean-Philippe Madonia’s Mégane. Retirement was the sensible option, in order to avoid a fire.  Being pushed wide during the hustle of the second start, he rejoined well behind the pack, recovering to finish second among the Gentlemen Drivers.

Xavier Combet drew his conclusions after this incident-packed week end : «Despite all the problems we encountered, we can only be reassured concerning the performance of our cars.  To summarise, the men have improved, the pure performance is still there, but race incidents made our task more complicated.  We are confident and already looking towards Le Mans, where everything will be different … »
