Nasser Al-Attiyah und Timo Gottschalk (Q/D) gelang auf dem Weg von Copiapó nach La Serena in Chile der Tagessieg vor ihren Teamkollegen Carlos Sainz/Lucas Cruz (E/E) und Giniel de Villiers/Dirk von Zitzewitz (ZA/D). Mark Miller/Ralph Pitchford (USA/ZA) erzielten in einem weiteren Race Touareg die fünftbeste Zeit hinter dem französischen X-raid-Piloten Guerlain Chicherit im BMW. Die Gesamtwertung führt weiterhin Carlos Sainz vor Nasser Al-Attiyah und Mark Miller an.

Besonders bemerkenswert: Beim vierten Etappensieg von Volkswagen in diesem Jahr erzielte Nasser Al-Attiyah mit 5.59 Minuten den bislang größten Vorsprung eines Tagessiegers bei der Rallye Dakar 2010. Diese Leistung erreichte der Rallye-Profi aus Katar auf der bislang kürzesten Prüfung, die allerdings durch schwierige Dünenfelder der Atacama-Wüste führte. Der ursprünglich 354 Kilometer lange Abschnitt wurde um mehr als die Hälfte auf nur noch 170 Kilometer verkürzt. Wegen einzelner Nebelbänke hatte der Veranstalter den Start um 3:45 Stunden verschoben.

"Auf einer sehr sandigen Etappe hat der Race Touareg mit TDI-Power erneut gezeigt, was man braucht, um unter schwierigsten Bedingungen zu gewinnen. Auch die Qualität unserer Fahrer war heute wieder offensichtlich.

Obwohl die Prüfung heute sehr kurz war, haben Nasser Al-Attiyah und sein Beifahrer Timo Gottschalk in den Dünen einen beträchtlichen Vorsprung herausgefahren. Vier Race Touareg unter den ersten fünf Fahrzeugen sind eine starke Leistung, ebenso wie die dreifache Führung in der Gesamtwertung."
