Conquest Racing Honda Grand Prix of St. Petersburg Race Preview
26.03.2010: Conquest Racing is back on track this week for the Honda Grand Prix of St. Petersburg, joined by new driver Bertrand Baguette and 2009 sponsors Ronn Motor Company, Inc.
Conquest Racing is back on track this week for the Honda Grand Prix of St. Petersburg, joined by new driver Bertrand Baguette and 2009 sponsors Ronn Motor Company, Inc.
Conquest Racing and driver Mario Romancini are back on track this weekend for the second round of the 2010 IZOD IndyCar Series in St. Petersburg, Florida. The team used the short amount of time during the off-week to make changes to the car in preparation for this weekend’s action.
"The team spent the time since Sau Paulo analyzing data and information we collected in the first race of the season in order to prepare and improve for St. Petersburg,” said Conquest team owner Eric Bachelart. “The entire team is looking forward to racing at St. Petersburg and because the team and Mario have both run here in the past we are hoping to a have a successful weekend."
Last season, Conquest Racing had a successful performance at the Honda Grand Prix of St. Petersburg. The team claimed a top-ten finish and the second fastest lap of the race with rookie Alex Tagliani, despite an unfortunate incident involving another car, causing a flat tire and an extra pit stop for the team. The team would like to repeat last year’s strong showing and run again in the top-ten.
Romancini has good memories for St. Petersburn in 2009. Driving for the Andersen Racing Firestone Indy Lights team, Romancini posted good results after starting the race in 12th place and enduring 18 laps run under the yellow flag, he passed six cars and eventually claimed a 6th place finish. Moving up to the IZOD IndyCar ranks for 2010, he is hoping to again find a way to qualify well and improve throughout the race and would be pleased with another top-ten finish.
“I’m looking forward to getting back in the cockpit of the car this weekend,” said Romancini. “The first race in Sao Paulo was definitely a lot of pressure for me. Racing my first IZOD IndyCar race, on a track I had never seen and in my hometown was a difficult way to begin my IZOD IndyCar career. I have taken the off-week to fully examine the entire race, lap-by-lap to learn from that experience. Having been on this track before and I feel positive about our performance potential in St. Petersburg."
Same Place, New Face
Conquest will be joined by a new face this weekend, a face that will quickly become familiar to the team and to the IZOD IndyCar Series paddock, Belgian Bertrand Baguette. Baguette is joining Conquest Racing for the first time this weekend after being announced the he will compete full-time ride with the team for the 2010 season. Baguette, 2009 Formula Renault 3.5 Champion, will be getting his first taste of America and its open-wheel racing in St. Petersburg, where he will be meeting with the team and learning the new car in preparation for his first race on April 11 in Barber, Alabama.
“I am excited to be visiting America and my new team for the first time,” commented Baguette, who despite missing the first two races of the season, should be a strong contender for Rookie of the Year honors along with his teammate. “I have heard that the car and the racing is quite different than what I am used to, so naturally I am anxious to start learning as soon as possible.”
Baguette and Romancini, who will compete together for the first time in their careers as teammates, have previously been on the circuit together, in 2008, where they raced as competitors in the World Series by Renault. Team owner, Eric Bachelart, anticipates utilization of the dynamic duo's complementary strengths for positive results on all tracks. Both have a proven aptitude for road/street courses and Romancini’s experience and success on the ovals in 2009 should benefit both drivers in 2010.
“I am proud to be fielding two very talented rookies this season,” said Bachelart. “Despite both being new to the IZOD IndyCar Series and car, I anticipate the two working very well together to help the team and the drivers achieve great results.”
Conquest Racing announced this weekend that they have renewed sponsorship with its 2009 partner, Ronn Motor Company. The #34 car driven by Romancini will carry the Ronn Motors blue and black this weekend showcasing its successful H2GO™ hydrogen fuel-injection system.
