British racer Adrian Quaife-Hobbs will contest the new GP3 series with Manor GP3. The 19 year-old raced to fifth place in the F3 Euroseries two weeks ago but feels that the opportunity to join the Virgin Racing junior team offers a better long-term opportunity as he seeks to progress up the motorsport ladder.
“I’m really looking forward to my first taste of GP3 next week.” said Adrian. “The new championship looks very exciting and it will be great to be racing on the F1 calendar and in front of the F1 team managers. The opportunity to join the Manor GP3 Virgin Racing junior team was simply too good to turn down.”
The GP3 is a new single seater series launched in 2010 and will be a stepping-stone into the GP2 Series, which kicks off supporting the Spanish Grand Prix in Barcelona this weekend. The races will support several European rounds of the FIA Formula One World Championship under the watchful gaze of F1 team managers.
Thirty cars will contest the GP3 series and the Dallara chassis will be powered by a Renault 4 cylinder, 2 litre, turbocharged engine developed by the Renault F1 Team. Adrian will join James Jakes and Rio Haryanto at Manor GP3, which occupies the same race shop facilities as the Virgin Racing F1 team. The team will offer the prize of an F1 test with Virgin Racing for the most successful Manor GP3 driver.
The season goes green in Barcelona, Spain where Formula One kicks off its European season. The series will then resume in Istanbul and Valencia for rounds two and three before the only home race of the season, the British round four at Silverstone on 24-25 July. The series reaches its climax in September with the finale being held at the historic Monza circuit in Italy. The full 2010 GP3 calendar is: 8-9 May, Barcelona, Spain, 29-30 May, Istanbul, Turkey, 26-27 June, Valencia, Spain, 10-11 July, Silverstone, Great Britain, 24-25 July, Hockenheim, Germany, 31 July – 1 August, Budapest, Hungary, 28-29 August, Spa-Francorchamps, Belgium, 11-12 September, Monza, Italy.
