Arden duo enjoy a brighter day in Monaco

15.05.2010: Rodolfo Gonzalez and Charles Pic performed strongly in the main GP2 Series race in Monaco this morning – although success is a relative term in the wake of yesterday’s qualifying woes. As is customary on the tight street

Rodolfo Gonzalez and Charles Pic performed strongly in the main GP2 Series race in Monaco this morning – although success is a relative term in the wake of yesterday’s qualifying woes.

As is customary on the tight street circuit, the race’s opening stages were fairly chaotic and a series of minor collisions broke up the field. Gonzalez and Pic kept their noses clean, however, and moved up from their lowly grid positions to run 11th and 14th respectively.

The race was briefly interrupted at half-distance, when Ho-Pin Tung (DAMS) crashed within the swimming pool complex and triggered a Safety Car period, but the Arden duo continued to make steady progress upon its resumption. They eventually crossed the line together in 10th and 11th positions, with Gonzalez just ahead.

Rodolfo:

“We made good progress today and I’m pleased to have scored a positive result. The car was good at the start of the race, but it began to understeer on my second set of tyres. Overall I just did the best I could, given my starting position, and I’m grateful to my mechanics for getting me in and out of the pits so quickly during the mandatory tyre stop.

“I’m now looking forward to tomorrow’s race, because I will be starting behind some good, quick drivers and will try to learn a little more by following them!”

Charles:

“The start was tough because I nearly stalled and lost a few places, which dropped me behind Marcus Ericsson. My radio wasn’t working, which made life difficult during the pit stop. I missed the original call to come in, because I couldn’t hear the team, and they eventually summoned me with the pit board.

“Our tyre stop was good, but I nearly stalled again when I pulled away. I pushed as hard as I could behind Rodolfo, but predictably – this being Monaco – I wasn’t able to overtake him. I felt I was potentially quicker, but there was nothing I could do.

“We have a few set-up changes planned for tomorrow, so we’ll see what happens then.”
