Podium for Yelmer Buurman on home track

18.05.2010: Yelmer Buurman took a home podium place for Atech Grand Prix-managed AC Milan in the final race of the Superleague Formula by Sonangol at Assen on Sunday, together with fastest lap in the opening race. Three top six finishes for Liverpool FCís James Walke

Yelmer Buurman took a home podium place for Atech Grand Prix-managed AC Milan in the final race of the Superleague Formula by Sonangol at Assen on Sunday, together with fastest lap in the opening race. Three top six finishes for Liverpool FC’s James Walker showed a return to form for the defending champions.

Free practice kicked off the weekend’s activities at the Assen track, the first time Superleague Formula has visited the Dutch circuit. In the second session, Buurman underlined his potential with the fastest lap.

Qualifying for the races took place on Saturday and saw both take to the track in the second group session. In this Buurman posted the third quickest time, with Walker sixth.

Buurman’s performance allowed him into the Quarter-Finals where he went head-to-head with Girondins de Bordeaux’s Franck Montagny, the Dutchman just missing out on a place in the Semi’s.

Race one kicked off early on Sunday morning with Buurman lining up fifth and Walker 11th. After getting up to fourth in the race, Buurman dropped a place at the pit stop to cross the line fifth, but secured fastest lap as consolation. For Walker, a storming drive saw him claw his way through the field to finish sixth, passing series points leader Craig Dolby in the  Tottenham Hotspurs car with 12 laps remaining.

Race two featured a reverse grid and saw Buurman and Walker line up side-by-side on row seven. A sterling drive by both saw them carve their way through the field to once again come home in consecutive positions, this time Walker finishing ahead in sixth and Buurman seventh.

Buurman’s performance allowed him into the Super Final shoot out in the five-lap dash for cash. The flying Dutchman made a great start and attacked from the outset, pushing pole-sitter Anderlecht's Davide Rigon hard into Turn 1.

Into Turn 2 however, series leader Craig Dolby in the Tottenham FC car took second place which he held until lap four, when a fantastic move by Yelmer at Turn 5 moved him ahead, albeit only until the pair exited the corner when Dolby retook the position.

For Walker too, his first points in Superleague Formula earnt him a place in the Superfinal and with it the opportunity for his first standing start in Superleague after the rolling start procedure of races one and two. A great performance by the young Jerseyman netted a fine fourth place to notch up three top six finishes from the three races.
