Second and third for Buurman in Jarama

21.06.2010: The Atech Reid Superleague Formula by Sonangol partnership had four cars competing for the team in Spain this weekend, with AC Milanís Yelmer Buurman keen to repeat his double victory of last time out. Qualifying kicked off with the traditional knock

The Atech Reid Superleague Formula by Sonangol partnership had four cars competing for the team in Spain this weekend, with AC Milan’s Yelmer Buurman keen to repeat his double victory of last time out.

Qualifying kicked off with the traditional knock out rounds on Saturday with Liverpool FC’s James Walker out first in Group A and AC Milan (Buurman), Sporting Club de Portugal (Borja Garcia) and FC Porto (Alvaro Parente) in Group B.

Walker sat comfortably in fourth in his session to easily qualify through to the quarter finals. In the second group, Buurman, who had already shown his pace by topping the times in second practice was also through and would go head-to-head with Walker in the second of two quarter-finals, the Dutchman just pipping the Jerseyman to the win.

This left Buurman in the semi-final fight with Olympiacos, which Buurman won comfortably, pitching him against an on-form John Martin in the final. At the finish it was Martin who just got the jump on Buurman by just over two tenths, but gave the AC Milan driver, currently second in the points table, a front row start for the first race.

Race one started in bright conditions on Sunday morning and produced another superb display by Buurman, maintaining his grid position to bring his car home in second, taking his third podium finish from four races and gaining fastest lap along the way.  FC Porto’s Parente drove a strong race to take eighth place with Liverpool FC and Walker 15th. There was disappointment for Garcia (Sporting Club de Portugal) who didn’t get to the finish, his DNF ensuring he would start from pole in race two.

In the second race Garcia made a great start to take the immediate lead holding off the challenge from behind for ten of the 33 lap race up to his compulsory pit stop. However a slow pit stop dropped him down the order although he recovered to cross the line 13th.

Walker drove a storming race to move up through the field in the Liverpool FC car, keen to build on his solid performance last time out. The reigning championship-winning team netted fourth place at the finish, after a determined push for the final podium spot, to keep their title hopes very much on track. Buurman drove another strong race to get into tenth place after starting on the back row of the reverse grid, with Parente following him home in 11th.

Buurman’s runner-up spot in the opening race was enough to give him entry into the six-car, five-lap dash for cash which followed immediately after race two and the AC Milan driver did well to avoid first corner chaos sparked by pole sitter Craig Dolby forcing out the cars of FC Basel and AS Roma. As cars scattered in all directions, Buurman picked his way through the carnage to come home third behind Chris van der Drift and Martin and consolidate his second place in the championship.
