FAZZT Race Team was hoping for a better outcome to close out the first oval track portion of the 2010 schedule, but Canadian driver Alex Tagliani wound up in 12th place, two laps behind race winner Tony Kanaan in round 8 of the IZOD IndyCar Series held Sunday on the 1.408-kilometer Iowa Speedway.
Starting sixth, Tagliani maintained his position until lap 22 when he ran into back markers that sent him back five spots to 11th place. Then, with his car going away in heavy traffic on a short track, it became difficult to overcome the gap that separated him from the leaders.
Tony Kanaan returned to victory lane for the first time since May 28, 2008 in Richmond, Virginia when he edged then none other than his Brazilian fellow countryman Helio Castroneves, the same rival he beat to the wire again this Sunday at the Iowa Corn Indy 250.
In a no holding back event where seven drivers exchanged the lead 16 times in the 250-lap, 352.043-kilometer race, Kanaan drove by Castroneves with 10 laps to go to beat the Penske driver by 4.203 seconds at the wire and give Andretti Autosport its second win of the year. Venezuelan EJ Viso finish third to record his best-ever IndyCar career finish. The biggest deception of the day was for Dario Franchitti who led the most laps in the race only to see a transmission gear issue end his day with less than 50 laps to go in the race.
"Well, it was exactly what I was mentioning yesterday that the biggest challenge in today's race was going to be getting the car consistent over the full run", Tagliani said after the race. "We started the race consistent but as the runs went on, the balance of the car went away and we picked up understeer. In the first stop, we made a tire pressure adjustment and it helped for a while but then the balance went away again. That was the biggest downfall of the whole race. So, we were continually chasing the car.
This is a difficult track because as you try to adjust the balance you start to lose in other areas and you just keep dropping back. I do feel like we learned a little bit today about what the car needs, so we will take that information and put it in our file for next year. Now we will look forward to getting back on track at Watkins Glen."

"It was a long day but it was great that we got the race in today with the forecast having been at a 70% chance of rain. I was told before I came today that the fans come out in force for this event at Iowa and they definitely did. For ourselves, we learned a lot that will benefit us when we come back to Iowa next year and will also help for the remaining ovals this season.
My message to Alex and the team before every race is to maximize their efforts and get as many points as we can and we got valuable points today for the championship. Now we're looking forward to getting back to the shop and getting to work on the cars for the upcoming road course portion of the season."
In the overall point standings, Will Power, who finished fifth today ahead of Scott Dixon, retakes first place with 274 points, 11 more than Dixon in second place. Dario Franchitti drops two spots to third overall with 260. Fourth place now belongs to Helio Castroneves, nine points back from Franchitti. Ryan Briscoe is fifth overall with 240 points, while Tagliani is now 13th with 156 points.
The IZOD IndyCar Series has just concluded a four oval race sequence that began on May 1st at Kansas Speedway. Teams and drivers will enjoy a 12-day break before beginning a series of five road and urban course races at Watkins Glen, New York the weekend of July 4.
