Chevrolet’s Yvan Muller is favourite to win a second FIA World Touring Car Championship title, as the Frenchman heads to the season finale at the 57th Macau Grand Prix with a 37-point lead over BMW driver Andy Priaulx. For the sixth straight year, the FIA WTCC will host its doubleheader season finale at the Macau Grand Prix. After the penultimate races last month in Okayama, and with just a further 50 points on offer, 2008 champion Muller will be looking to seal the championship at Macau, with three-time champion Priaulx the only man still able to challenge for the 2010 title.
Heavy rain in Okayama was once again the story of the weekend as, for the third consecutive year, heavy downpours soaked the circuit for Rounds 19 and 20. After Priaulx earned pole position during Saturday’s qualifying session, Sunday’s rain favoured Muller.
In extremely difficult conditions, the Chevrolet driver kept a cool head and collected two third- place finishes. After a brilliant second- place finish in the first race, Priaulx spun and retired in the early stages of Race 2. A few laps later, 2009 title holder Gabriele Tarquini (SR-Sport) lost control and crashed out of the lead, and saw his title defense end as well.
Augusto Farfus won a rain-soaked Race 2 in the penultimate meeting ahead of the Macau Grand Prix.
In the Manufacturers’ Championship, Chevrolet is only 14 points shy from securing the title.
Race 1 was won by Chevrolet’s Rob Huff, while Augusto Farfus (BMW Team RBM) was the Race 2 winner.
Local Drivers Make Impact in Macau
For the past five years, touring car drivers from Macau and Hong Kong have been an integral part of the FIA WTCC’s season finale at the Macau Grand Prix. Now celebrating its sixth year at Macau, five drivers from the neighbouring Special Administrative Regions of China will take part in this year’s double header, including Macau racers André Couto, the winner of the Formula 3 Macau Grand Prix in 2000, Joseph Merszei and Henry Ho Wai Kun, as well as Hong Kong drivers Philip Ma and Darryl O’Young, the first full-time competitor from city in the series.
O’Young, a two-time Porsche Carrera Cup Asia champion, who has won three times on the Guia Circuit including the inaugural Macau GT Cup in 2008, stepped up to the FIA WTCC challenge in 2010 with Bamboo Engineering racing a Chevrolet Lacetti. The Canadian-born Hong Kong driver has claimed three Yokohama Independents’ Trophy victories thus far, including one during the penultimate races in Okayama (podium pictured above), and will arrive in Macau 2nd behind Sergio Herandez in the Independents’ Trophy.
Last year saw a record number of five Macau drivers on the grid for the FIA WTCC races, with Ho, Merszei, Liu Lik Ka, Lei Kit Meng and Couto all taking part. In fact, Couto has been part of every FIA WTCC round in Macau since the series first became part of the Macau Grand Prix in 2005.
As O’Young makes history as the first Chinese driver to race a full season with the FIA WTCC, another Hong Kong racer made history two years ago in Macau when he became the first Hong Kong driver to score a FIA WTCC point at the 55th Macau Grand Prix. Matthew Marsh, driving a BMW 320si for Wiechers-Sport finished eighth in Race One.
