Tiago Monteiro a achevé la saison 2010 du Championnat du Monde des Voitures de Tourisme FIA WTCC à la 5ème place du classement général et sur le podium de la finale disputée ce week-end à Macao.

 
Sur le circuit le plus complexe du calendrier, Tiago était le seul à pouvoir rivaliser avec l'armada des Chevrolet qui avaient monopolisé les trois premières places de la grille de départ. Avec une SEAT León TDI parfaitement réglée par son écurie SR-Sport et grâce notamment à la deuxième meilleure vitesse de pointe, Tiago s'est hissé à l'extérieur de la deuxième ligne de la grille et a pris un excellent départ qui lui a permis de mettre Alain Menu sous pression.

En tentant de résister, le Suisse est parti à la faute et Tiago s'est emparé de la 3ème place puis a attaqué le champion du monde, Yvan Muller. "J'étais un peu plus rapide qu'Yvan mais il n'est pas champion du monde par hasard ! Il n'a pas fait de faute et il pouvait compter sur une vitesse de pointe un peu supérieure à la mienne pour se mettre hors de portée de moi aux freinages où j'aurais pu avoir une chance de le dépasser," explique Tiago. Le circuit de Guia a été fidèle à sa réputation avec une course agitée et un dernier tour curieux bouclé derrière la voiture de sécurité.

"C'était une course un peu folle sur un circuit un peu fou et je regrette qu'André Couto ait été piégé dans l'accident du premier tour. Je dédie mon podium à sa famille qui a vécu un drame il y a deux semaines," révèle Tiago en rendant hommage au pilote originaire de Macao qui retrouvait la compétition sur ses terres, au sein de l'équipe SEAT.
 
Au départ de la deuxième course, Tiago s'élançait de la 6ème place et devait éviter en urgence la Chevrolet d'Alain Menu qui avait calé sur la grille. Ralenti par la manœuvre, il tombait à la 7ème place mais en gagnait une après la neutralisation de l'épreuve lorsqu'il dépassait Poulsen au virage de Lisbonne. En compagnie d'Yvan Muller et de Rob Huff, Tiago s'est retrouvé bloqué derrière Augusto Farfus. "Nous étions plus rapides mais il n'est jamais facile de dépasser dans un championnat aussi serré.

C'est encore plus vrai à Macao et avec Farfus ! Son pare-choc se détachait et lorsque je me suis retrouvé derrière lui je devais en même temps l'attaquer et ne pas rouler dessus pour ne pas risquer une crevaison. Finalement j'ai été gêné dans le dernier tour et les deux pilotes qui me suivaient en ont profité pour me passer en même temps."
 
Le 5ème podium de Tiago lui permet de gagner une place au classement général qu'il termine en 5ème position. "Ma quatrième année dans le Championnat de Voitures de Tourisme m'a permis de profiter de mon expérience pour progresser considérablement. Bien aidé par une équipe formidable, SR-Sport, ainsi que par SEAT, j'ai remporté deux victoires et je suis monté cinq fois sur le podium.

Je me suis constamment battu pour les premières places. Avec un peu plus de réussite et si je n'avais pas été pris dans des incidents dont je n'étais pas responsable, je pense que j'aurais pu me battre pour le titre pendant une grande partie de la saison. Je remercie SEAT et SR-Sport pour cette année fantastique."
