Peugeot 908 - Neuer Diesel-Sportwagen erzielt Podiumsplatz in Sebring

Mit den Plätzen drei und acht beim12-Stunden-Rennen in Sebring (Florida) erreichten beide Peugeot 908 beim Renn-Debüt das Ziel. Für die zwei LMP1-Diesel-Sportwagen zählte der Einsatz beim Saisonauftakt des Intercontinental Le Mans Cups (ILMC) zum Vorbereitungsprogramm für die 24 Stunden von Le Mans im Juni.
Im Qualifying hatte Stéphane Sarrazin im neuen Sportprototypen, der über ein 3,7-Liter-HDi-V8-Triebwerk mit rund 550 PS verfügt, die Pole-Position erobert. Auch zu Beginn des Rennens gaben die beiden Peugeot 908 mit den Startnummern "8" und "7" das Tempo vor. Der Peugeot 908 mit der Nummer "7" (Alexander Wurz/Marc Gené/Anthony Davidson) verlor seine Siegchancen, als sich Marc Gené und Audi-Pilot Dindo Capello im Kampf um Rang zwei touchierten und der 908 daraufhin einen längeren Boxenstopp einlegen musste.
Das Rennen wurde durch viele Safety-Car-Phasen geprägt. In den letzten Runden kämpfte der Peugeot mit der Nummer "8" mit Franck Montagny, Stéphane Sarrazin und Pedro Lamy mit dem Peugeot 908 HDi FAP des Teams Oreca (Lapierre/Duval/Panis) und dem Honda ARX (Pagenaud/Brabham/ Franchitti) um den Sieg. Nur noch diese Fahrzeuge lagen innerhalb einer Runde. Franck Montagny, der den Peugeot 908 über die Ziellinie fuhr, musste sich mit nur 13 Sekunden Rückstand im Kampf um Platz zwei geschlagen geben.
"Wir freuen uns, dass beide Fahrzeuge die komplette Renndistanz absolviert haben", erklärt Olivier Quesnel, der Direktor von Peugeot Sport. "Es gab keinerlei Defekte, die Autos waren zuverlässig, außerdem haben die Piloten starke Leistungen gezeigt. Wir sind hergekommen, um uns auf die 24 Stunden von Le Mans vorzubereiten, diese Aufgabe haben wir erfüllt. Wir haben außerdem wichtige Punkte im ILMC gesammelt und führen die Herstellerwertung an."
