Gordon Shedden closes in on title lead as Hondas dominate.

Gordon Shedden closes in on title lead as Hondas dominate.

06.06.2011: Gordon Shedden has closed to within two points of the lead of the Dunlop MSA British Touring Car Championship after three races packed with incident and controversy at a rather damp Oulton Park.

Gordon Shedden has closed to within two points of the lead of the Dunlop MSA British Touring Car Championship after three races packed with incident and controversy at a rather damp Oulton Park.

The Team Honda driver scored heavily at the Cheshire circuit with a win, a second and sixth place finishes in Sunday's three races.

Shedden took a fairly comfortable win in race one then looked odds on to make it a double in race two before an over optimistic passing attempt by Honda team-mate Matt Neal at the last corner of the final lap saw the two Civics collide, leaving the Chevrolet Cruze of Jason Plato to pick up the pieces and take the victory.

The Scotsman then followed Mat Jackson's Airwaves Ford Focus home in the final race of the day and now trails team-mate Matt Neal by just two points at the top of the standings.

Shedden said "It's been an interesting weekend! - To win the first race was great and it was a fantastic result for me in race three from where I started. It’s been a really great weekend for us and I really can't wait for Croft in two weeks time."

After Saturday's sunshine rather damp conditions prevailed throughout most of the day, giving rise to plenty of action and incident at the parkland circuit. None more so than the collision between the two Hondas in race two. Matt Neal however was quick to acknowledge his rather embarrassing mistake and said, "At the time going for it seemed the right thing to do but in hindsight it was a dumb move on my part. I actually told Gordon if he wants to take me round the back of the truck and take a swipe at me he’s welcome, I deserve it.”

Despite inheriting a rather lucky race two win current BTCC champion Jason Plato was once again far from happy with the pace of the RML Cruze in comparison with the turbo-charged Hondas and gave vent to his feelings once more in a rather forthright TV interview after his win.
