MATTERLEY BASIN Great Britain 13. FIM MOTOCROSS WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP
– The FIM Motocross World Championship is getting to its end of the season and Matterley Basin will host the 13th Grand Prix of 15. The British track is present in everybody’s memories as it hosted the 2006 FIM Motocross of Nations and all the British fans are looking forward to this weekend as the last time the FIM Motocross World Champion was in the UK was in 2009 in Mallory Park.
Clement Desalle, runner up of the series and winner of the previous Grand Prix in Loket, is going to miss the last three Grand Prix of the season, as he needed surgery on his left shoulder after crashing during the Belgian Grand Prix last weekend.
During the British Grand Prix it will also take place the penultimate round of the FIM Veterans World Cup and the penultimate event of the UEM EMX125 series.
Red Bull Teka KTM Factory Racing MX1’s Cairoli has been one of the most consistent riders in the second half of the season, obtaining four GP victories and being on the podium in ten out of 12th rounds. Besides, Cairoli could take advantage of Desalle’s injury earlier in the season and managed to close the gap with the Belgian and become the leader of the series. At the moment, Cairoli has 48 points advantage over the runner up of the series and there are still 150 points up for grabs.
The second classified is Rockstar Energy Suzuki World MX1’s Desalle, but unfortunately he will soon drop some positions in the standings as the season is over for the Belgian rider. This season Desalle has proved his talent and he has had the red plate on his Suzuki machine six times, but he has been touched by bad luck and the numerous injuries made him lose the Championship.
Monster Energy Yamaha’s Frossard is third in the Championship 81 points behind Cairoli, so the French MX1 rookie still has some chances to obtain his maiden FIM MX1 Title. Frossard missed very valuable points last weekend finishing 12th overall, so he knows that this weekend is crucial if he wants to keep on fighting for the Title.
The Czech Grand Prix was not a good weekend for Evgeny Bobryshev either, but he managed to keep the fourth position in the MX1 point standings. The Russian is looking forward to race this weekend in Matterley Basin, because he really liked the track when he raced for Russia in 2006, but his team did not qualify for Sunday’s races and he had the feeling that the track would have fit his riding style.
Red Bull Teka KTM Factory Racing MX1’s Nagl won the MX1 qualifying race in Loket, but could not make it to the podium on Sunday. However, he still holds the fifth position of the MX1 standings, nine points behind Bobryshev. Gonçalves, who was third overall in Loket, is 29 points behind Nagl and the Portuguese has recently proved that he feels best than ever on his Honda machine and he is determined to climb up some position in the point standings.
Ken De Dycker, who had improved notoriously in the last races, will miss the British Grand Prix due to an a crack in the L6 neck disc. De Dycker rode the Czech GP with heavy pain on his neck due to a crash he suffered in Lommel, but after some medical exams after Loket, the doctors determined that the Belgian rider had to miss at least this Grand Prix.
For Tom Church it will be a very special weekend because it will the last time he rides a home Grand Prix as he has already announced his retirement for the end of the season. Another home rider in the MX1 class will be Billy Mackenzie, who will be back in the FIM MX1 World Championship after his last appearance in 2009.
2010 FIM MX3 World Champion Campano will join this weekend the Monster Energy Yamaha’s squad, as David Philippaerts will need some time to recover from his two-wrist injury.
Red Bull Teka KTM Factory Racing MX2’s Roczen is leading the FIM MX2 Championship with 27 points advantage over his teammate and runner up of the Championship Jeffrey Herlings. The German has ruled most of the Grand Prix, but he knows that a small mistake, like the one he made in Loket during the last lap of the first race, can ruin his season. However, Roczen is mentally very strong and he will be 100% focus not to lose the Championship in these three remaining rounds.
On the other hand, Herlings has admitted that it is going be very tough to stop the German from winning the MX2 Title, but he is determined to do his best to keep the second position and in case Roczen makes a mistake, be there and take advantage of any opportunity. Herlings is confident with his riding and he will not give up until all the possibilities are gone.
CLS Monster Energy Kawasaki Pro Circuit’s Searle is riding home this weekend and he is determined to obtain his second overall victory of the season, after winning the French Grand Prix in the beginning of June in Saint Jean d’Angely. Searle is third in the point standings, 105 points behind Cairoli, so as he knows that the chase of the MX2 Title is almost over, winning his home Grand Prix would be the best reward for the hard work done throughout the season.
After being on the podium for six times in a row, Monster Energy Yamaha’s Paulin has not been among the top three positions in the last three Grand Prix. The French is focused to do a good performance this weekend and try to fight again for his maiden MX2 GP victory and improve his fourth position in the point standings.
Completing the top five is Arnaud Tonus from Bike-it Cosworth Wild Wolf Yamaha, who obtained his maiden MX2 race victory in Loket after winning Saturday’s qualifying race. For Tonus is going to be like riding home this weekend, as his team is based in the UK, so it would be very special for the Swiss rider to obtain his maiden podium of the season in Matterley Basin.
Max Anstie, sixth in the MX2 point standings, is looking forward to racing in front of his home fans this weekend and fight to be on the podium, which he has missed in many occasions this season. Other home rider Jake Nicholls is also determined to do a good performance this weekend and try to finish among the top five of the MX2 class.
During the British Grand Prix it will also take place the penultimate round of the FIM Veterans World Cup, where everything will be decided in the very last two rounds of the series. Mats Nilsson is still the leader of the championship with 34 points advantage over Pascal Bal, but he will also miss the British round and he is very likely to miss the last one, too.
Bal is just one point ahead third classified Roger Jakobsson and Alfredo Camps, who is fourth in the championship, is just 17 points behind the second in the standings. Having said that, the championship is wide open and anything can happen this weekend at Matterley Basin.
The fifth round of the UEM EMX125 series will take place in Matterley Basin this weekend. The Championship has been dominated by Italian Simone Zecchina and Samuele Bernardini, who have obtained two overall victories each.
With two more rounds to go, Bernardini became the new leader of the series in Loket and he is now 11 points ahead of Zecchina. Tim Gajser keeps on being third in the point standings, but in the previous round he managed to be on the second step of the rostrum for the first time this season.
