Dakar Rally 2012  Stage 12  January 13th, 2012

14:13 - car 304 - More problems for Holowczyc

The Polish driver has again ground to a halt in the dunes at Nazca and has been at a standstill for 20 minutes, stuck in the sand 35 kilometres from the finishing line.

14:08 - car 304 - Holowczyc in the danger zone... Gordon surges on…

The Polish driver has now been slowed down by the critical sandy zone around the 159-km point of the special.

Meanwhile, Robby Gordon, who was the twenty-second to start the special this morning, is already getting to grips with this section.

Perhaps he will be the main beneficiary of the situation at the finishing line of the special stage…

14:04 - car 301 - Now De Villiers is stuck in the sand…

Evidently, the finish at Nazca is proving to be merciless for the cars, even if the time lost is minimal for the moment. Giniel de Villiers is the latest driver to get stuck after 159 km, but has managed to keep going, losing only a few minutes.

14:00 - car 305 - Roma loses time

Now it is Nani Roma's turn to be slowed down by the dunes. The Spaniard also got stuck in the sand for several minutes, but less than his team-mate Stephane Peterhansel. A handful of minutes at the most, but the end of the special stage is proving to be very demanding of the competitors in the car category.

13:38 - car 302 - Peterhansel stuck in the dunes!

Stephane Peterhansel has got to grips with the day's major difficulty: the dunes around Nazca. The Mini driver and general standings leader ground to a halt for several minutes after 142 km of the special state, losing approximately 15 minutes in this setback. A mishap that could reignite the fight for victory in the car category.

13:11 - car 303 - Gordon is not giving up

The American is still up for the fight and determined to put on a show: he leads the car category by more than two minutes at CP1 after 72 km of the day's special stage. With a total time of 39'11”, he leads Holowczyc by 2'29”.

12:45 - car 304 - Holowczyc quickest at CP1

The Polish rider has climbed to the top of the day's provisional rankings with a time of 41'40”, 1'17” ahead of Stephane Peterhansel. Behind, Roma, Novitskiy, and Leal Dos Santos confirm the supremacy of the Minis on the start of this special. Only Giniel de Villiers in provisional fifth place is not at the wheel of a Mini in the Top 6 at CP1.

12:40 - car 301 - De Villiers fourth for the moment

The South African has just reached CP1 after 72 km of the special stage with the fourth best time of the day, 51” behind Peterhansel. Russian Leonid Novitskiy is behind the two Minis and leads the Toyota driver by 4”.

12:29 - car 302 - Peterhansel in control against Roma at CP1

At CP1 after 72 km of the timed section, Stephane Peterhansel boasts a total time of 42'57” and leads his Spanish team-mate, Nani Roma, who is 14” behind his team leader.

11:52 - car 302 - Peterhansel starts the special…

Mini No. 302 started the special as scheduled at 11.35 AM local time. Stephane Peterhansel and Nani Roma are already on the special stage and will be followed by Ricardo Leal Dos Santos and Giniel De Villiers. There are 90 cars left in the race and 61 trucks that will be starting this timed section in twenty minutes time.

05:42 - car The cars have left Uchumayo

This morning the cars and trucks are setting off before the bikes... But from further away, since, last night, the rally was divided into two bivouacs, due to the marathon stage organised for the bikes.

The first car and truck crews have therefore left Uchumayo near Arequipa and are heading to the start of the special that has been shortened today because part of the tracks have been rendered unsuitable for the rally after recent heavy rainfall.

Naturally, Stephane Peterhansel, Nani Roma and Ricardo Leal Dos Santos were the first to get things moving following the 1-2-3 by Mini on yesterday's stage.

02:30 Nazca in their lines of sight

For its second day in Peru, the Dakar 2012 will set off divided along the link stage, with the bikes and quads starting from a different bivouac to the cars and trucks. Later, however, all the vehicles will be taking up the same challenge: a start in the Pampa Blanca and a finish in the dunes around Nazca.

In addition 259 kilometres of link stage, there will be 245 against the clock, presenting the opportunity for the outcome of the duels in the bike and car category to become clearer, whilst the Patronelli brothers exercise their control over the quad category, in a similar way to the De Rooy clan's domination of the truck race.

The highlight of the stage will be a twenty kilometre section of uninterrupted dunes, taking the riders and drivers into a new dimension. The compactness of the said means this chain of dunes will not be too hard to cross, but for the masters of sand there will still be time to play for, especially just three days before the finish. For those who still remember the driving conditions in Mauritania, their old habits could bring them some valuable minutes.
