KTM European Junior Cup in Brno


Lukas Wimmer of Austria emerged as the winner of Rd. 5 of the KTM European Junior Cup at Brno Czech Republic on Sunday and assumed control of the championship standings for these young riders all on KTM 690 Duke machines.


The race, run later than originally programmed was highly anticipated as five different riders had won the previous rounds.


Javi Orellana, winner at Aragon was on pole and made as good start but it was the young Austrian Wimmer who was first into the opening corner in front of Gaston Garcia of Spain followed by compatriot Orellana Adrian Minana crashed out spectacularly on the opening lap thankfully without injury.


As the race settled down over the next couple of laps the battle at the front intensified with six riders easing away from the chasing pack. Christian Vidal, Jean-Francois Demoulin and Stinius Viking Odegard all worked together to bridge the gap to leading trio. At the same time Wimmer and Orellana traded places at every opportunity as Demoulin eased into third.


Behind the leading six Sepp Scarcella had worked his way up to seventh just ahead of Artur Wielebski and round one winner Adrian Pasek who was back in the series after an injury.


Wielesbki and Federico Fazzina were handed a position drop penalty at the start of lap 4 while Tom Busch who finished second in last year’s Junior Cup pulled in much to the disappointment of the German youngster who qualified in an impressive fifth on his KTM debut.


As the riders started the final lap, the battle had consolidated between the four lead riders but it was Wimmer who held off the late charging Gaston Garcia who in turn held off Orellana and Demoulin respectively. Wimmer holds a slender eight points as the competition heads for Silverstone in the UK in two weekends time.



The KTM European Juniors Cup is held in conjunction with the World superbike Championships and is designed to nuture tomorrow's racing talent
