Imperiale Racing confirms to be a strong protagonist of International GT Open 2018 also in Spa-Francorchamps (B), where it took an important double podium in one of the most awaited weekends of the season.

The Italian outfit reached the Ardennes resolute to recover some points after the difficult exit at Paul Ricard, strong with its official driver lineups on the Lamborghini Huracán GT3: namely, #63 Giovanni Venturini (ITA) and Jeroen Mul (NL), #25 Riccardo Agostini (ITA) and Rik Breukers (NL), both competing in category PRO, and #19 Raffaele Giammaria (ITA) and Jia Tong Liang (PRC) in PRO AM.

The Belgian weekend has been particularly tough since the beginning with several drivers that could aim to top positions and the team and drivers worked hard since free practice to define the best setup for the cars on a spring, dry weekend.

Agostini put in a great lap of the legendary circuit of Spa-Francorchamps in Q1, completing his best lap in 2’16.267s that placed the #25 car in the second row and P4. Venturini qualified the #63 car in sixth place in 2’16.563s, while Giammaria, posted a good lap in 2’17.574s and placed the #19 challenger in fourth place of PRO AM, fifteenth overall.

Things got trickier in Q2 to slide in the front rows, and Breukers ended the session with the eighth quickest time in 2’17.022s, on the #25 car, that was the first of the Lamborghinis. Mul was 12th on the #63 car in 2’17.555s, while Liang completed the session with a best lap time of 2’20.545s, that placed the #19 car in seventh place of PRO AM and twenty-second overall.

Race one has been quite exciting with Venturini putting in a strong getaway on the #63 car. He gained one position installing himself in fifth place behind teammate Agostini. The GT Open 2017 Champion found his way past Agostini at Les Combes during lap four and then put in several solid laps that allowed him to close in on the front-runners.

Mul took over from Venturini and led the race for a long time when, after fending off the attacks of the Ferrrari #51 for a long time, he had to concede his position. Imperiale Racing’s pairing closed their effort in second place.

Agostini kept a perfect rhythm in his stint on the #25 car displaying his driving skills in the fight with the #993 Ferrari that he kept at bay until the pit stop. Thanks to a perfect pit stop, Breukers rejoined third and easily managed to keep the position until the chequered flag.

The performance of the #19 car has been quite constant. Giammaria first and Liang then lapped on very good times. The drivers managed to recover one position closing their race in P13, just short of the podium of their category.

Mul and Venturini put in an exciting comeback in race two on the Lamborghini #63. Imperiale Racing drivers capitalized on a spectacular performance, recovering a stunning seven position thanks to a precise and aggressive driving by both drivers. At the flag, several overtaking moves under their belt, the lineup closed fifth gaining important points for the championship.

The performance of the #25 car has been quite regular, with Breukers driving through the first stint and Agostini managing the second, avoiding contacts in the mid of the pack. They ended the race in ninth place overall.

The #19 car also completed several overtaking moves as Liang found a good rhythm on the legendary circuit of Spa-Francorchamps before handing the wheel over to Giammaria. The Italian recovered several positions completing a series of laps on the same pace of the front-runners and closing the race in P18 overall, that was seventh of PRO AM.

Giorgio Ferro (Imperiale Racing, Motorsport Manager):

“We did our best. I want to thank the whole team Imperiale, starting from our mechanics to our drivers, that have been very professional and got the most of the potential allowed to our Lamborghini Huracán. Unfortunately, the current Balance of Performance system does not allow to play on equal terms with the rivals.

The BoP is a tricky process, that being based on a scientific and methodical approach should grant a level competition. This was not the case in this first part of the season and the race in Spa confirmed what objectively seen in the previous two rounds. Now we will take some time off to ponder about the remainder of the season”.
