TCR Europe @ Hungaroring: Borkovic and Mora take one victory apiece

TCR Europe competitors delivered two very entertaining races at the Hungaroring, where Mikel Azcona and Dušan Borković, first and second in the standings, experienced mixed fortunes.

The Serb of Target Competition, who had won both rounds of the season-opener at Paul Ricard, returned to victory in Race 1, but was involved in a collision and retired in the second.

PCR Sport’s young Spaniard set an outstanding pole position and fought for a podium result in the first race, then incurred a drive-through for a track limit infringement in Race 2 and dropped out of the points.

Azcona remained on top of the classification, but his leading margin over Borković went down to just one point. At the same time, local hero Dániel Nagy closed the gap thanks to a solid performance that earned him podium finishes in both races. The M1RA driver is now a closer third, 25 points behind Azcona.

Attila Tassi, the other favourite of Hungarian fans, was less lucky. In the first race he was pushed off by Julien Briché while he was second and chasing Borković; he partially made up for the disappointment in Race 2, finishing fourth behind his teammate Josh Files.

One of the leading actors was TCR Portugal double champion Francisco Mora who claimed his maiden victory in the European series, leading home his teammate Nagy in a second race that presented M1RA with a triumphant 1-2 at its home circuit.

The event gave a few other drivers the opportunity to score their best results so far in the season: Stian Paulsen (second in Race 1) finished on a TCR podium for the first time, Francisco Abreu led the second race in the early stages and was eventually classified fifth, TCR returnee Ferenc Ficza (9th in Race 2) showed his potential in the Zengő Motorsport Cupra DSG and Stefano Comini was finally able to fight for the podium in the Autodis Racing THX Honda Civic despite starting both races from 22nd on the grid.

It was a weekend to forget for Briché and Jean-Karl Vernay who had shared race victories in the previous event at Spa. Briché produced an emphatically aggressive drive while fighting with Tassi in Race 1 and ended up with a penalty; he got another for track limits in Race 2 and so remained scoreless.

Vernay’s weekend was jeopardised by the wrong strategy in Qualifying; as a consequence, he missed the right moment to set a time on a drying track and was then relegated to start from 21st in both races. He was able to recover to seventh in Race 1, but in the second he too was given a drive through for track limits.

The TCR Europe series will resume at Assen TT Circuit on August 18/19.
