The third race weekend of the 2019 FIA World Touring Car Cup (WTCR) presented by Oscaro was held at the 5.922 kilometres long Slovakia Ring near Bratislava. Tom Coronel participated with his Spanish race car, run by Belgian Comtoyou DHL Team Cupra Racing.

This weekend’s schedule was slightly different than normally as all three races were held on Sunday. In his first race in the morning, Tom Coronel started from fifth place on the grid. Dark clouds were seen over the circuit and rain made the track treacherously slippery in certain places.

Right after the start, Coronel benefited from the track width and briefly ran in third place, only to lose four positions soon after that in the turmoil of the opening stages. Then, Tom picked up speed again and fought with everything he had. He had some contact, fought back and eventually finished eighth.

Problems with a slow puncture on the right front tyre affected the Dutchman during second qualifying. The session got off to a promising start with rain tyres, but then Coronel changed to slicks and things went wrong after that. Disappointment in the Cupra as all hopes of a nice classification were blown.

The result was a pair of 27th grid positions. In the second race, he still managed to convert that into a tenth-place finish and some further world championship points. The third race was an equal affair and Tom was in 15th place with one lap remaining. After he got hit, however, bodywork made contact with a rear wheel. With plenty of smoke coming from the tyre, he continued, but was no longer able to fight and finished 23rd.

“It turned out to be quite a special weekend,” Tom Coronel reports. “In free practice, I had the speed and I ended up in the top 5. The handling of the Cupra was great and my speed was very consistent. This weekend, we had a Dutch data engineer and co-operation with him went really well. It looked set to become a nice weekend and in qualifying for the first race, I ended up in fifth place.

The start was well and I was third going into the first corner, but Farfus and Michelisz pushed me towards the outside. I dropped back as a result, but I had some nice fights with the likes of Tarquini and Catsburg and I finished eighth.”

He continues: “Qualifying for the second and third race took place at a track that was half wet, half dry. I started with rain tyres and we changed to slicks with a few minutes remaining. The goal was to complete a fast lap and to try to make it into the top 5. In turn 4, however, the tyre came off the rim and it was game over. I had to start 27th for both races after the organisers gave me dispensation, because, obviously, my time was too slow to be allowed to race.

I started 27th for race 2 and then I overtook one driver after another and still finished tenth. In the third race, I wanted to try that again. The car ran well and I had nice fights with several drivers, sometimes moving up places by braking really late and I got as far up as eleventh again. Towards the end of the race, Haglof came back onto the track after having gone off and hit me hard on the rear tyre. Then, it was over and I could hardly continue.

Too bad about the poor result, but my feeling is good. Handling of the car was great and allowed me to fight. With the races at Zandvoort coming up next week, that is a good feeling. We will use this week for the final preparation and then everything will be okay. I really do hope to score at least a podium finish at my own Zandvoort circuit,” a competitive Tom Coronel concludes.
