Faust Salom delivers strong performance on debut at the Hungaroring

11.07.2019: The Spaniard was the fastest man of Teo Martín Motorsport and McLaren’s Junior Team on his first appearance at the Hungaroring, which hosted the third round of the GT Cup Open last weekend. But the current Balance of Performance, which aims at getting all

The Spaniard was the fastest man of Teo Martín Motorsport and McLaren’s Junior Team on his first appearance at the Hungaroring, which hosted the third round of the GT Cup Open last weekend. But the current Balance of Performance, which aims at getting all cars close enough in performance, isn’t still working properly and it prevented him from improving two 5th place finishes

Faust Salom experienced a bittersweet weekend at the Hungaroring. Despite the driver from Menorca (Spain) showed his pure speed talent at the wheel of the Teo Martín Motorsport-run McLaren 570S, the Woking-built cars continue still been given an unfair Balance of Performance and their drivers have minimum chances to fight for wins or podiums in the Pan-European championships.

On Friday morning, Salom got his first taste of the Hungaroring during private testing as it as his debut on the track, which had barely discovered on the simulator of Teo Martín Motorsport. Salom and teammate Guillem Pujeu made a positive start as Teo Martín Motorsport had brought some upgrades for the Hungarian venue. Salom clocked a time of 1m53.000s in the first practice session as in the second, following a rear tire issue, heavily crashed into the barriers at T13. Despite it was a huge impact, Salom didn’t sustain any injuries.

On Saturday, Pujeu took on the qualifying duties in his McLaren, which was rebuilt throughout the night hours by Teo Martín Motorsport, to post a lap time of 1m52.285s, which left him 6th in Pro-Am class and 11th overall on the starting grid. Pujeu handed over the car to Salom in ninth place, Salom put in a recovery drive to finish seventh overall and fifth in class.

On Sunday, Salom took part in Q2 and the Spaniard set a lap time of 1m50.069s, the fastest of any McLaren driver throughout the weekend. Salom lined up sixth on the grid and qualified third in Pro-Am class. In the afternoon, Salom still moved up to second at the start but later he couldn’t keep the pace of Mercedes, Lamborghini and Porsche cars. After heading into the pit lane in fifth place to hand over the McLaren to Pujeu, the latter finished ninth and fifth in class.

“Racing isn’t always a fair sport and our last weekend was just the case. Despite we completed an almost perfect weekend, our results at the Hungaroring don’t reflect the progress that our team is making to fight for top honors. We got a bittersweet taste because I drove quite brilliantly being the fastest McLaren driver on the track and, besides, I managed to improve the car almost every time I hit the track.

After a terrible Friday, as I had a huge high-speed impact crashing into the barriers, Teo Martín Motorsport worked restlessly to repair the car on time for qualifying sessions and both races, in which I managed to secure a 6th place overall and third in Pro-Am class” explained the Spaniard.

Salom added:
“we need to continue having a strong determination to keep going in the second half of the season. I would like to express my thanks for the interest showed after my crash on Friday and for everybody’s support despite it’s being a difficult season so far. Of course, I would thank Teo Martín Motorsport and McLaren Customer Racing their effort to repair the car. It’s amazing to work with them. We will be back even stronger at Silverstone in September! Summer time right now!”
