Maxime Potty: “I want to fight at the front”

The TCR Europe competition will reach its conclusion this weekend at the famous Autodromo di Monza. It is a seventh event which Maxime Potty approaches with the firm intention of setting a great impression. The young Belgian member of Team WRT did not have the season he had hoped for, but he wants to show that his podium places at the beginning of the year were not at all by chance.

The bitterness has eased, the situation has been analysed in detail and conclusions have been drawn. The sad episode at Barcelona is now a thing of the past. While this incident took away from Maxime Potty all his hopes of finishing on the TCR Europe podium, it did not alter his motivation.

“It took me a few days to digest,” the 19-year-old Belgian admits. “But I have been able to take my mind off things since then and I am extremely motivated at the start of this last meeting. I will have to make sure I do not think about the championship and I will only have one objective: to fight at the front.”
Last year, Maxime and his Volkswagen Golf GTI TCR were consistently in the lead group, with the Hamoir driver twice finishing fourth. “I really enjoyed the circuit,” confirmed the Team WRT driver. “The high speeds provide a great sensation and our car performed well in those conditions.

Although the Golf GTI TCR is a car already competing in its fourth season and has to compete with more modern cars, I am convinced that there is still a way to aim for podium places. I proved this at Hockenheim and Spa-Francorchamps and I intend to do it again here.”

With its long straights and the slipstreaming, Monza also requires a slightly different approach. “It is easy to be knocked out of the lead group if you miss an attack or have to defend too strongly against an opponent,” says Maxime. “Even in groups, it is therefore important always to think about keeping up with the pace in order to remain in touch with those in front. This is a point on which I have worked hard. I hope it will bear fruit.”

The format of the Italian event - which will also be the fifth and final TCR Benelux event - is as usual: two free practice sessions on Friday and qualifying practice on Saturday at 10.45. As always, it will be essential to shine in that early stage, to be in a position to aim for the podium and, incidentally, scoring valuable points to help the Team WRT to keep its second place in the Teams ranking.

The two races (which can be followed live on and on the RTBF Auvio website are scheduled for Saturday at 16.50 and Sunday at 11.35.
