Faust Salom finishes the 2019 GT Cup Open season in style at Monza

15.10.2019: The Spaniard scored a double podium finish in Pro-Am class at the season finale of the series at the Autodromo Nazionale di Monza. Salom, behind the wheel of the Teo Martín Motorsport-run

The Spaniard scored a double podium finish in Pro-Am class at the season finale of the series at the Autodromo Nazionale di Monza. Salom, behind the wheel of the Teo Martín Motorsport-run McLaren 570S, secured a front-row start on Sunday and his stints played a key role for both rostrum finishes at the Italian venue.

Faust Salom rounded off successfully the 2019 GT Cup Open season, the European series in which the Mahon-born driver proved to be an emerging Spanish GT star in the coming weeks. Salom, who already stepped onto the podium previously at the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya, delivered another strong performance at the wheel of his Teo Martin Motorsport-entered McLaren 570S with a second and a third place finishes in Pro-Am class.

On Friday, during the free practice session, Salom already was the fastest McLaren driver taking the fourth place in the timesheets with a best lap of 1m54.813s. On Saturday morning, his teammate qualified 7th on the starting grid with a best time of 1m54.762s. Later in the race, Pujeu couldn’t make a good start and dropped to the back of the field.

When Pujeu handed over to Salom, the latter posted a quick pace and drove to second in class, his season-high result. On Sunday, Salom took qualifying duties and clocked a lap time of 1m54.015s, the fastest one of any McLaren driver throughout the weekend, to take second on the starting grid behind the unstoppable Lamborghini pole-sitter, which was almost two seconds quicker than anybody else.

Salom closely fought with his teammate Marc de Fulgencio during the first half of the race with Manel Cerqueda and Nili Leutwiler also in the battle with their Audi and Porsche cars. Despite Pujeu couldn’t match previous Salom’s pace, the Catalan crossed the finish line in third place in class and fourth overall.

“I’m delighted with such a strong season finale in the GT Cup Open. Teo Martin Motorsport and I finally achieved well-deserved podium finishes after working a lot the whole season. I really enjoyed driving at Monza and I can say it really fits my driving style very well.

On Sunday, I secured a front-row start but it was a sort of pole position because the Lamborghini is another level of performance. We left Italy adding two other podiums to our name and showing very competitive form” said Salom. The Spaniard added that “it was a hardly-fought season.

At the beginning, we struggled to score good results but later we managed to do it thanks to such a huge effort coming from everybody involved. On a personal side, it was nice to display my talent on the European scene and battling with top drivers. Once again, thank you very much! You all were important to make this possible. Let’s see what the future brings us!”
