Rally Hungary, FIA European Rally Championship Round 8 of 8
Town Hall, Nyíregyháza, Friday 8th November, 14h00

In attendance:

Łukasz Habaj, Sports Racing Technologies
Chris Ingram, Toksport WRT
Alexey Lukyanuk, Saintéloc Junior Team
Dariusz Poloński, Rallytechnology

Alexey, as the defending champion, how has you season so far been like and what are your goals for this weekend?

Alexey Lukyanuk, Saintéloc Junior Team

I don’t know if you want me to be honest or not, I think I can say that our championship, our season this year looks like s***. We only scored on two rallies without problems, so yeah, I am surprised that we are still in the top three and still have some chances to fight.

You have 32 stage wins so far this year, so your form is amazing, right?

Alexey Lukyanuk, Saintéloc Junior Team

Yes, it’s good of course to know that we can be fast, but it’s also nice to have some points in the end. Something is not working for us again, okay, we have some speed at least which is good.

Łukasz, you had some adventures this morning, first of all, what happened exactly?

Łukasz Habaj, Sports Racing Technologies

Good morning, just before we start, I got the information that we got the car back on the road and yeah, there is a chance they will repair it. So, uh, bad news guys (laughter). Of course, there is the time limit. If the rally started tomorrow, then most probably we would have fixed the car. Right now, it’s difficult to say, the car is now being transported to the service park so we will know more in about an hour.

But yeah, we still have a lot of hope that it can be fixed and we can start. We had nothing special, I just went off. Probably I took too much risk, I should have been slower. The conditions are very tricky, so I got my first warning. If I continue, then I will try not to make this kind of mistake anymore.

Chris, the overall leader of the championship so far on 135 points with one round to go, welcome to Hungary, can you spell the name of the town?

Chris Ingram, Toksport WRT

I don’t think you can!

Your season has been fantastic season so far, and you are obviously looking to achieve the ultimate goal this weekend. Does this change anything about how you will drive your car on the special stages this weekend?

Chris Ingram, Toksport WRT

Thank you, I feel like it’s not been a good season and I am surprised to be leading the championship. I think it’s been a difficult season for all of us, I’ve had a good result in the last few rallies and we’re in a really strong position here. I just want to stay relaxed and drive my best and enjoy this rally. It’s going to be a fantastic event.

You just missed out on the ERC1 Junior title, how does that make you feel?

Chris Ingram, Toksport WRT

I felt s***! (laughter). But I got over it pretty quickly and shortly after, I realised I was leading the championship and you know, who cares about the Junior championship if you can win the overall. This has been my ambition and I will give it everything…to be against these two guys who I have looked up to for many years, hopefully we can get our names on the trophy.

Dariusz, you are still in the hunt for the first Abarth Cup title this weekend, how are you feeling coming into the weekend?

Dariusz Poloński, Rallytechnology

We are second place in the championship now and we have a chance to win, so our goal is to be as fast as possible, to win the rally.

And you are also fighting for the ERC2 title as well which you are in second position overall. So, there is a double reward?

Dariusz Poloński, Rallytechnology

You are right and that puts me really under pressure to finish the rally, which will be quite difficult as this is a very difficult rally and I didn’t expect that.

Questions from the floor:

Question to Chris Ingram from István Simon (Vezess.hu, Hungary):
Chris, according to the weather forecast this weekend, there should be a lot of fog and a lot of rain, which is quite similar to the conditions you have in the UK. Is it an advantage for you?

Chris Ingram, Toksport WRT

Yeah, it’s perfect. I think I drive faster in the fog and the darkness because I don’t get distracted by things at the side of the road. It’ll be difficult but we like these conditions so I’m quite happy with that.

I mean, you must have a lot of experience in these conditions?

Chris Ingram, Toksport WRT

Yeah definitely, like some of the stages look like Rally GB in the Welsh forests. It’s so dirty, I’ve never seen a Tarmac rally [like this]. These guys, I know Alexey doesn’t have that much experience in such horrific, s****y weather.

Question to all drivers from Anita Tóth (Nemzeti Sport, Hungary):
To all drivers, after the recce, what will be the winning strategy for this weekend? What will your strategy be?

Alexey Lukyanuk, Saintéloc Junior Team

I don’t know, can there be a strategy of you eat soup with a fork? (laughter). It’s just a chance that you get something and you succeed, so you know, it’s a big gamble, a big lottery. I don’t know, we need to start and then we will see.

Chris Ingram, Toksport WRT

Same really. Anything can happen in this rally so I need to be as consistent and focused as possible and not get too excited and not push too hard. Just do what I’ve done all year really.

Łukasz Habaj, Sports Racing Technologies

My strategy, we’ll try to survive. I was not aware of the fog, I was distracted by the rain by the way. I don’t drive fast in the fog for sure, but I don’t know, I will try to survive.

Dariusz Poloński, Rallytechnology

I will follow the guys because they are very experienced. I will also try to survive. For sure it will be a difficult rally for the rear-wheel-drive car we are using and much more difficult than [for] the R5 cars so the strategy is to be on the finish.
