Legend Boucles @ Bastogne 2020 Simplified technical regulations and coefficients

To standstill is to take a step back … Nonetheless there are time when it is better to take a step back in order to move forward!

Last year the Legend Boucles @ Bastogne organisers had played the authenticity card when they launched the ‘Super Legend’ category for vehicles not fully corresponding to the technical regulations. Regulations misunderstood, misinterpreted … and not truly appreciated.

RAC Spa decided to simplify the technical regulations, as also those well-known coefficients specific to the Legend Boucles…

“We must admit that when it came to the 2019 edition we went a step too far regarding the technical regulations, irritating more than one, Pierre Delettre commented. As such our wish for 2020 is to return to something more basic, and more sensible. It is notably important that the ‘Legend’ and ‘Challenger’ categories rest on the same regulations, in order to avoid a non-compliant car in ‘Legend’ being transferred to the ‘Challenger’ class.

The only difference is that the ‘Challenger’ category remains reserved to cars built before 1987, whereas in ‘Legend’ we accept machines from the Annexe J2 FIA, built up until 1990, as long as these are solely two-wheel drive models. The age coefficient of these cars built between 1987 and 1990 passes from 1,4 to 1,2.

More importantly, for the ‘Legend’ and ‘Challenger’ categories, as from now brakes and suspensions will be of… a free choice! This will avoid modification of cars evolving with other types of brakes and suspensions the rest of the year. As for gearboxes these may be of the sequential type … however the coefficient then passes to 1,5!

“When it comes to the engines, the source of many discussions before, during and after the event, a 20% re-bore is allowed without any modification of the coefficient, Pierre Delettre continued. Should the re-bore exceed 20% as compared to the original engine, or if the power unit has passed from 8 to 16 valves, a 1,5 coefficient will be applied. On the other hand, the Ford Escort models of the ‘Milligton’ type, or powered by units of another make, are forbidden! A question of preserving the event’s historic aspect.”

Last but not least, the age coefficient has also been simplified. For the vehicles built up until 31st December 1961, the coefficient will be 0,95, so as to encourage more older models entering, whereas for cars built between 01/01/1962 and 31/12/1986, the coefficient will be 1,0.

As for the ‘Classic’ category the technical regulations remain unchanged. As previously announced a safety roll-bar will be mandatory as from the 2021 edition. This implies that for the Legend Boucles @ Bastogne 2020, this requirement will not as yet apply. “We have already decided that in 2021, only cars built after 01/01/1971 will be affected with the fitting of a roll-bar. Always wishing to favour the entry of older models, dating from the ‘50s or ‘60s,” Pierre Delettre specified.
A clear message.

For this 2020 edition of the Legend Boucles @ Bastogne, a certain technical and sporting conviviality is being called upon. So spread the word …
