DAKAR RALLY 2020 Saudi Arabia
Stage 9 from Wadi Al Dawasir to Haradh
Tuesday, January 14th 2020

Bikes at start    116

12:35 A leading group forms

After 244 km of the special, the battle for stage victory is more open than ever in the bike category. Pablo Quintanilla, Ricky Brabec, Joan Barreda and Toby Price are only separated by 32 seconds!

Standings at PK 347

1        012    J. BARREDA BORT     HONDA    002:51:20        00:00:00
2        009    R. BRABEC     HONDA    002:52:51    00:01:31    00:00:00
3        007    K. BENAVIDES     HONDA    002:54:24    00:03:04    00:00:00
4        002    M. WALKNER     KTM    002:55:31    00:04:11    00:00:00
5        016    L. BENAVIDES     KTM    002:55:36    00:04:16    00:00:00

12:22 Quintanilla takes control

Pablo Quintanilla must absolutely try to regain time on Ricky Brabec to climb back up the general standings. So far, so good for the Chilean after 244 km, with a 5 seconds lead over the general standings leader!

12:09 Minor fall for Ben Young

Ben Young, 63rd in the general standings this morning, has had a relatively trouble-free Dakar until today. However, the Australian will have to remain vigilant after a fall on the first part of the special. It should not be forgotten that he rode half of the rally with a broken hand on his first participation last year following a fall on stage 5!

11:19 Caimi lies in wait

Franco Caimi, the leading Yamaha rider in the general standings in ninth position, has enjoyed a good start to the special. The Argentinean has reached the neutralised section in fourth position, 2’39 behind Ricky Brabec.

10:52 Brabec still leads

Ricky Brabec continues to lead the dance after 156 km and is now 1’14 ahead of Pablo Quintanilla. Toby Price remains in the top 3, trailing the American by 1’34.

10:43 Benavides reaches the neutralised section

Kevin Benavides is the first rider to reach the 34-km long neutralised section of the stage, after 156 km of the special. He is keeping pace with Joan Barreda and Matthias Walkner who set off after him this morning.

10:33 Barreda falls

Joan Barreda has been a bit too attack-minded on the first part of the special, leading to a minor fall. However, the Spaniard is still in the reckoning for stage victory after 100 km.

10:27 Brabec takes charge

Ricky Brabec continues to live up to his position of general standings leader and now leads the special after 104 km. The American is 1 minute ahead of Joan Barreda and Toby Price, meaning that he is thwarting the plans of his rivals who wanted to regain time from him!

10:01 A herd of camels joins the special

A herd of particularly lively camels have shown up in a canyon, after 76 km of the special. Fortunately, for the safety of the competitors, one of the organising team’s helicopters was able to disperse them...

09:53 A bright morning for Price

Toby Price has been the quickest rider to reach top pace on the start of the special and is on the attack after 50 km. The Australian has achieved the best time, 37 seconds ahead of Ricky Brabec. Pablo Quintanilla and Joan Barreda trial the stage leader by 1’21.

09:31 Laia Sanz at the start

Laia Sanz is readying herself to start the ninth special of the rally. The leading woman in the bike race lies in 18th position in the general standings, 2 hours and 52 minutes behind the leader on her tenth Dakar.

09:17 Brabec hits the road

Now Ricky Brabec has started the ninth special of the rally in fifth position, behind Luciano Benavides. This position is ideal for the American, with Toby Price and Pablo Quintanilla setting off later also able to take advantage of the tracks left by the first riders to put in a good performance.

09:01 Benavides opens the way

Kevin Benavides was the first to start the day’s special after completing the 450 km of the link stage this morning. The Argentinean rider set off 3 minutes ahead of Joan Barreda who was in turn followed 3 minutes later by Matt
